So what ship are you flying?
Just curious to see what everyone else is doing. I guess I will begin with myself, since I started the thread, of course
After doing a bit of trading, I built myself a small fleet. My main three ships are a vendetta, a pacifier and a goddard.
The vendetta I use for dogfighting. I simply really liked the ship design at first, then later I thought it was very underpowered as I could not ever get it to do over 3000 mj/s of damage, no matter what kind of configuration I tried. That meant that taking missions agains't the Aera was a no no, which is what I wanted to do. So I changed it so it could hold 4 medium weapon mounts. Its equipped with 4 razors and 4 ion bursters now. It does about 14000 mj/s a damage, what by itself DOES seens overpowered. But due to its reactor, it can only keep up firing for about 2 seconds, and it takes 10 seconds to fully recharge after that. Razor guns have very low ammo too ( 250 rounds ), and 10.000mj/s of all that damage comes from them,so its basically a marksman kind of ship ( well.. it has autotracking on everything ). Fire and be sure you are going to hit. Plus, it has no missiles.. so I feel its balanced.
My pacifier I filled it up with hephaestus ( 4x ) and ion busters ( 2x ) along with two salvos of dumbfires ( 16 each ) breeze missiles ( 60 each I think ) and torpedos ( 4 total ). I realise the pacifier ins't as maneurable as the admonisher, but it hosts more missiles and its larger torpedo bay and cargo hold make it more versatile. Though it can't really dogfight well, it does 11,000 mj/S of damage, has a large load of ammo, good range of firing, a lot of armor, plus missiles. Its suited to deal with nearly everything and it can even do cargo missions!
And the Goddard, when I first got it I thought it was going to be the end it all ship. It was the first one of the three I got and configured. But I soon found out you -can't- do any sort of dogfighting on it, even agains't heavy fighters. Also, even a 2 % of damage on its milspec package needed about 50.000 creds to be repaired, so that limited its use by quite a bit. I decided I'd let the turrets and missiles handle longe range fighting and have my guns deal closer range. So I went into rlaan territory and got 3 ktek beams for it ( and did that take a lot of exploring...) and got ion beams and busters for its medium and light mounts, so it would deal a sizeable amout of phase damage and target light fighters as well. It can do about 15000mj/s for a indefinite amount of time ( about 1000 seconds ) and hosts the usual large amount of torpedos and missiles that goddards do. I filled it with FoF, dumbfires, torpedos and EMP torpedos. I use it only when taking on larger capships and aera bases, and even so, only when there aren't many light fighters around. A goddard surrounded by light fighters is surely in a sticky situation simple cause any amount of damage will cost you millions to repair later.
I have this fleet stationed at Elimahel ( or something like that ) which is a Andolian frontier system with the Aera.
My favorite ship of the fleet my plowshare cause thats the ship I've made all my credits with .

I did that run until I could afford the expensive construction items. Then I began doing a run from a commerce center to an arid planet, which is pretty much enough to help you reach a million. When you reach 10 million you can do a run from a commerce center to ice, arid, mining bases and many others , selling AI cores/auto factories for more money than you will ever be able to expend.

What construction supplies should I buy and how much money should I have before I start. I'm at a little over 100,000 credits now. And I'm guessing you did the construction run in Oldiezy. Something like that.
Once I get enough money, what ship do you recommend I buy. I was thinking about a Franklin or a goddard.

The Franklin is kinda under powered it is a diplomatic shuttle and not expected to protect itself you can't upgrade the reactor so you can't power any of the high energy guns or even heavier shields so a bit of a dud for player use.Now the goddard is a heavy bomber and kick ass not very manoeuvrable but with the turrets covering your six you don't need the agility but do get auto-tracking on all the mounts even the missile mounts(really helps dumbfires) have fun.

At 100,000 I believe you can start the construction run. Just buy the most expensive item you can afford off a commerce center and find an Arid or Ice planet to sell them off to ^^.
I dont recommend you buy a goddard cause the ship really ins't fun to fly at all and the repair costs for it are over the top. I reccomend that you buy a plowshare once your capital is enoughto still have 100k credits after acquiring the ship, just so you make more money each trade run. After that, I don' know.. I find the pacifier and admonisher are fairly nice ships but I don't know what you want to do in game.

Each repair % on the goddard milspec package is about 50.000 creds. THe mislpec package is also the onnly thing that gets damaged in combat. You can fly merchant missions to pay for your repairs, and honestly after you make your first million bucks you will be making just about that each merchant run you do, but if you want to be a bounty hunter or somesuch, that high repair cost might cut your profits.
The admonisher is good as well and fights a lot like the pacifier, though its a bit of a lighter version, so you might want to look into that as well. I have found Lancelots do exceptionally well in dogfights, more so than the majority of other fighters, since they can turn fast and carry a fairly heavy weapons loadout, but they cant handle cap ships.

Anything in the mil spec package is fixed you can not exchange one component for another and the upgrade space is usually very small as well and it can be tricky to repair sub-systems that are part of the package the regular or stock version allows you more freedom in the load out and other components but again you run out of space it's always a compromise on what you want and what fits.

I am flying a Refurbished Robin so far. I Have been playing for some hours and watched some ships, e.g. the Hyena and the other lighter Fighters maneuver in combat. It's a nice n cheap ship, allthough i think i have overloaded it badly with a level 4 Shield lvl 3 reactor and lvl 2 cap, including overdrive 2 and jump drives. But i love it's capabilities of missles and rockets.
Killer Bees FTW. It justs feels like flying a ship that came from the Starlancer Universe, armed to the teeth with Tempest rockets.
It's cheap, useful, versatile and has a neat arsenal and speed for a ship of it's class.
I haven't found better guns yet than standard lasers, i wanted to try out the light disruptors, but they are expensive as hell.

Welcome Red-Robin why does it not surprise me that you like the Robin as for the guns you will find that the beam weapons are a bit more effective but you do need auto-tracking on the mounts so that it stays on target longer Have fun

I'm flying a LLama named the Roger Young, but I don't care for it's movement when it's loaded down. It accelerates like a pig and turns slowly, and of course has a lot of inertia to bleed off. Not as bad as the Plowshare has proven on its one and only run (almost smacked into the mining base in Cephid 17 because I couldn't stop in time), but just altogether wallowing. 'Course, it has its upsides, like enough maneuverability to pull me through some interesting blockade situations (does this only happen to me, or do AI ships of angered factions try and make real blockades for anyone else?). I'm looking to save enough to purchase a Clydesdale though, to haul some serious freight and then of course mount turrets and larger weapons. Besides... I loves me some cap ship action. The bigger the better.
Speaking of, how much do Clydesdales normally run, and where exactly do I find the "trantor class planet" I read about in an earlier post? I don't really have the drive to go sifting through code or anything to cheat, so I'm lookin for a rumor instead.

Tramp freighter for hire. Will work for good whiskey, overstocked weaponry, or just a good story.

I have a mule. I think that works just fine if you need to get a lot of cargo somewhere. Sometimes I have to visit 3 bases/planets to fill it with cargo that is profitable. If I just fill it up with anything usually a single planet does it of course.
Its going to be a LOT worse than a plowshare though. You'd actually be helming a huge ship instead of piloting.

I stopped being lazy and gave myself a Clydesdale. It certainly is like helming a large ship, and it's oh so fun when I've got upgrades and weapons. Pirates run away from me in it.Fireskull wrote:I have a mule. I think that works just fine if you need to get a lot of cargo somewhere. Hi all,
I have just started playing VS this August, so many of my experiences are possibly subject to correction.
The Franklin has been my favourite ship so far, as I have mad all my money with it. Imo it can be a bit misleading that it's declared as "heavy", but obviously in the hunter class, even a heavy ship is relatively light. It is very fast and maneuverable compared to most other ships of its size, although the weapons loadout is indeed not the most powerful. Still, heaving installed four Interruptor Beams (autotracking) in the available medium bays, I do reasonably well in any dogfight. Loading at least one of the large missile bays with a torpedo gives me even scope for anti-capship missions, firing cluster ammo into some group of enemies stupid enough to pester me on my trips has been enjoyable, too. I never had an idea what to do with the special weapon mounts (apart from installing some dumb tractor beam, of course), until I found out about the Rlaan mini-gravthumper. If you get as close as 925m, you can blow up almost any vessel with it, and as opposed to the torpedo ammo you have even got eight shots! The obvious downside is the cost of 60,000credits/shot.
Another nice feature about the Franklin is its Cargo bay of 300m³. With that, it is the only real dual purpose ship I found: You can fly cleansweep and bounty missions with it (keep away from the Aera, though!) as well as do some modest scale trading. Of course you won't be able to move large construction or factory equipment with it, but things like PAI Wetware and some mining stuff (which is not too heavy) do pretty well, and once you get more than 10,000,000 bucks you can continue with AI cores, when money won't ever be a problem for you.
My past ships:
The Llama of course, which I liked, but after I blew up the first few pirates on my trading trips, they would come back and pester me, along with some Forsaken and Uln, who appearantly grudged my lighting up pirates, too. So I felt I lacked both the firepower and agility to defend myself and the speed to simply put some distance between myself and them. Consequently I bought
a Progeny, which was nice flying after owning just a Llama, but now I found out that making money with just fighting missions was indeed very tough, nearly impossible to reach any decent amount. So I equipped the thing with a cargo bay extension and traded with PAI wetware along to those missions, which eventually accumulated enough money to afford and equip a Franklin.
My future ships:
Now that I have gotten into the stage where I can afford AI cores, I will try out all kinds of ships, but I think the most interesting may be the two heavy Rlaan ships, because they have great maneuverability and at least reasonable speed while being able to be equipped with heavy weoponry. Ktek rules!
The Zhuangzong has limited upgrade space, so I suspect one has to find a good balance between shield system and reactor + capacitor units needed to power four Ktek beams as well. As its fuel capacity isn't exactly huge either, long range missions or cleansweeps with many stopping points could become a problem. On the other hand, maneuverability is unsurpassed in my experience, and those four Ktek beams blow up any minor ship right in the instant of contact. Even capital ships can be brought down, but you'll need to fly several assaults because the capacitor will be drained after some longer shots and needs some time to replenish its power.
I have equipped a Taizong, but didn't yet gather any fight experience with it. This vessel is really heavy, so you won't suffer from power issues here: A class XV capacitor supports class XV shields, and powered by a class XII reactor it recharges quite quickly. Two heavy mounts for Ktek beams should be enough to take care of any attacking minor craft, while the special missile and light bays can be equipped with gravthumpers, which gives you 24 potentially fatal shots at sub-capital and even capital ships. This should garantee some fun, too. While not quite as lithe as the Zhuangzong, the Taizong has a somewhat higher travel speed, which could well make it my preferred travelling ship.
I hope you enjoyed reading this lengthy post,
Cheers!
