Favorite free (and legal) music available online
My favorite thing about off topic sections is that they let people get to know each other better. Because we're.... <cheese> a community. </cheese>
Anyways, I'm always looking for cool new music. You guys know of anything good that I can download free and legal on the Internet?
I'll start it off.
I've downloaded most of the freely available tracks from this guy http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/30/funky_tunes.html at mp3.com. He puts his music under the name 'Symphonic Chronicles'. It's mostly synthesized, but he's got some fairly convincing samples of real instruments. He's got stuff in several different styles... but I would definately describe his music as being in the tradition of quality computer game soundtracks.
My favorite tracks are:
The Flight of the Dragon Riders
The Dark Relic
March of the Seraphim
Lords of the Eternal Realm
Classic Cats Car Audio Demo
So! What's some cool music?

Right, but their free distribution of it can't be construed as permission to use it as we see fit. There's gotta be some specific permission associated with the thingie (like a license or written permission).pontiac wrote:With the permission of the author/copyright-owner you can use the music whereever he allows you to (correct me if i'm wrong here)Duality wrote:umm.. mabie if you get the author's permission or so..

Just want to be sure we're all on the same page here.
Actually, I've been doing a bit of digging for open source music to bolster Vega Strike's collection. I've found one piece so far that will fit in with the style. I found it at a site which I added to the wiki page.

It's not really free music (demo-music), but it's really worth the download.
Menu-Theme.mp2
... and the rest of the music files from the Haegemonia-Demo.
Unfortunately it is only for windows (proprietary exe-archiv).
If we had something like this for vegastrike i would even pay for the music .
Pontiac
PS: Don't know if one can give this music to other people without the rest of the game
EDIT: Just found some of them on the haegemonia homepage:
http://www.haegemonia.com/gallery_music.htm
But they are not as good as the menu-theme.

I've updated the wiki music links page. I've collected some new places to snag neat music over the past few months, and I put them up.

some friends of mine are making electronic drum&bass style music. some of their tunes have a nice spacey feeling, so I recommend to check them out:
http://www.klangterroristen.de
The page is in German, but is easy to navigate. My favourite tunes (downloads section) are:
* Quizat Haderach (I think this one contains 3rd party material)
* Canadian Whiskey Maneuver
* Commercial Dream (this one sounds pretty alien)
* Basstard
It would be nice if you leave a note in the guestbook or send them an email if you like the music. If there are plans to include some tunes in VS, somebody should ask for permission - I think they would be pleased to contribute.

Just wanted to post this one here too:
http://magnatune.com
I'm currently listening to the Rock channel there and it's quite cool.
Straight from their website:
" We're a record label. But we're not evil.... Listen to hundreds of MP3'd albums from our artists. Or try our genre-based radio stations. ...."
The rest of the statement is on their frontpage

I find it funny that nobody ever mentioned Ken Suguro's site here... http://www.iface.ne.jp/~ken/
Robert Eldridge does incredible things with an acoustic guitar.
KurtZ makes music you won't understand. Mostly a dark, heavy sort of electronica. He's rather imaginative and eccentric.
Everyone knows http://www.vgmusic.com .
A couple of nice songs by Tapani Siirtola.
The HVSC - more Commodore 64 music than you'll ever find the time to listen to.

Free Remake of the "Duke Nukem 3d" music:
http://www.markmcwane.com/music-dukenukem.html
quote from the website:
Pontiac
http://www.markmcwane.com/music-dukenukem.html
quote from the website:
Lee Jackson and Robert C. Prince III (Bobby Prince) wrote the now-beloved music to the Duke Nukem 3D game in 1994 and 1995. The main theme song, "Grabbag", is a "I can name that tune in three notes" kind of song, and gamers still love it. With the advent of high quality musical scores via MP3 or OGG, or some proprietary format, modern gamers are now accustomed to hearing music that is big, robust and CD quality. The original Duke Nukem 3D music was in MIDI format only, and it unfortunately did not age well. As a result, and with the permission of Lee and Bobby, I made the decision to create new and improved arrangements of all the Duke Nukem 3D music, and with new ports of the now open-source code to Duke Nukem 3D, my music can now be used in the game itself!
