As i consider to make cinematics for vegastrike , i've found a precious tutorial page
where you could learn too how to create planets , asteroids , spaceships .

For earth, I'd keep looking. That doesn't look overly impressive :p
For asteroids... they look a bit cliché. Real asteroids aren't like that. NASA and friends have a nice collection of real asteroid pictures, up close, and they're very interesting to study.

I think it looks quite good actually but there is no unwrapping and bump mapping involved there. I'm not that into blender but how do you go about to unwrap that thing?

Their are a few auto unwrap functions in blender and you can mark some seams so the texture space is convenient for painting or do your texture painting within blender so the unwrap becomes irrelevant, not so good with blender myself but I am moving up the learning cliff
