Can't seem to get the music to play...

Post by Maxaxle »

OS: Lubuntu 14.04 LTS AMD64
CPU: Intel i3-4160
RAM: 16GB DDR3
GFX: Secondhand GTX 560 Ti
Game install method: Play-Deb (via APTURL)

The long and short of my problem is that all ship sounds work as intended, but I can't get the background music to work at the main menu/on planets/in stations/in flight. And yes, I tried skipping through the music. I also tried copying all the music to ./vegastrike/music just incase the problem was permissions-related, but that didn't seem to change anything.

Launched the game from a terminal emulator, here's the output:

Hi Maxxale long time no see I have not had any problem with the music stream in ages(since 5.0) I see that you installed through Play-Deb on most distros they split the music into a separate package that as it weights in at about 165 MB so do you see a music folder(with lots of .ogg files) in /usr/share/games/vegastrike if not let me know and we will go from there and if it is there some details on your sound devices as a GTX only does video ;)

1. All of the music is indeed where it should be, and I've already listened to some of it to ensure that nothing's corrupt.
2. I'm just using the onboard audio hardware of my motherboard (an MSI "H97 PC Mate"). I haven't had any problems with said motherboard at all, so far.

Dumb question do you have "All Sound" selected in the setup app because all that I can see as being sound related is "AL lib: ReleaseALC: 1 device not closed" at the end of the output but that is an artefact off how the app was terminated you should be hearing music from the moment that the viewpoint opens right though loading phases.

I just now tested "All Sound" and "All Linux Sound", neither of them provide music.

There is a release of VS ( for windows ) that has a music bug .
It is possible that you use the same source files that were not fixed .
I have the fix somewhere , i'll make a search , it is 4 lines to edit in a source file .
I'll report later that fix when i will have found it .
:wink:

Edit : got it , look to my old github project :
https://github.com/Ezeer/VegaStrike_win ... diff=split

If your music.cpp at line 448 looks like the left side of the previous git page ,
just copy and paste the right side of the git page ( you can also dowload the single music.cpp and replace yours).

Code: Select all

 if (!track.HasWeapons())
            {
                // So what are you going to threaten me with? Exhaustion gas?
                return ThreatLevel::None;
            }

He is not compiling VS ezee he is using a packaged version for Linux so compiling solutions are not for him :wink: though compiling on Linux is quite simple been doing it for years myself :D

hey loki , as you are here , where is your 3d character , man ?
I'm still waiting man , give me something !
:wink:

Back to the subject , perhaps the release he is using has the mucic bug too ?
So perhaps your help to compile a fine versionof VS is the solution to his problem ?
Okay , to maxaxle as it is not a bot , but a friend .

Thanks for the support, but I can't seem to find "music.cpp" anywhere in the vegastrike directory (under /user/share/games).

Hi .
It's because like Loki said you are using a precompiled package of vegastrike.
To have the music.cpp file , you must checkout the sources files in the svn
and build the program . ( music.cpp is compiled and linked in Vegastrike.exe already )
As i'm not using Linux but windows ,i can't guide you for the build steps .
But Loki certainly would .
What is the vegastrike release you are actually using ? ( where you downloaded it ? )

Code: Select all

 if (!track.HasWeapons())
            {
                // So what are you going to threaten me with? Exhaustion gas?
                return ThreatLevel::None;
            }

Ok .
There is a thread with links to download VS and instructions ( sometimes...) for Linux:
http://forums.vega-strike.org/viewtopic.php?f=0&t=18088

May be you'll find a package that could work on your operating system , they should be
"official releases . "

Code: Select all

 if (!track.HasWeapons())
            {
                // So what are you going to threaten me with? Exhaustion gas?
                return ThreatLevel::None;

Still not sure if the 13.04 version is identical (or close enough to) the 14.04 version; any ideas?

IIRC there was update of gcc(complier) so it will need a new build I run Mint 17.2 which is based on Trusty Tahr 14.02 LTS and building was a doodle and I do have music :wink: so instead of checking out the svn repo just get the source and data tarbals if you decide to roll your own just start a thread Compiling Problems sub forum when you need help(you will :shock: ) I usually run the game in userland(I don't sudo install).

Late reply, I know, but installing the standard way (i.e. add repo, install packages via "sudo apt-get" commands) didn't seem to help, and I can't find (L)Ubuntu-specific source packages. Any ideas?

Looks like getting the source code bz file since you all ready have all the data :wink: Unfortunately our Sourceforge site seems to be under maintenance when I checked just now so when its back up download the code from the svn page that the home page points you to.There is a good set of build instructions on the wiki http://wiki.vega-strike.org/HowTo:Compi ... N_on_Linux when your ready just post I should be home most of the day.

Just now tried to grab the data package using the svn command, got this message:
svn: E000111: Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'https://svn.code.sf.net/p/vegastrike/code/trunk/data'
svn: E000111: Error running context: Connection refused
I know you mentioned the VS main page, but that seems to be down.

Yeah is seems that sourceforge our svn host was down for maintenance should be back online Monday considering there are several thousand hosted projects your not the only one waiting :twisted: you don't have to do a svn check out just get the compressed source code much a lighter download.

Excellent news and bad news! Excellent news is that, following the wiki instructions to the letter, I installed the current SVN version of Vegastrike (music works!). The bad news is that I couldn't "make install" it, and running the game from the build folder is kinda weird.

Terminal ouput:

Glad you got it running with the music :D as for running it in userland don't worry I've been doing that for years with no issues :mrgreen: what was the error message you go when you issued the make install command if it was a permissions thing remember that only root can install.

What if the music was played by a plugin-type from eg VLC or Mediaplayer?
Would that be easier?
You then can choose from directries, game or private, AND some mediaplayers can play internet-radio/podcasts, which is a nice feature if you are lonesomely waiting for that planet to be in reach ;-)

just my question.
could a playlist contain a web site ? would it be possible to have a hidden browser? just for the music? after hearing it 1000x its a bit 'over'
