Speech sound activation

Speech sound activation
This might be a dumb question, but I can't find a way to activate speech sounds in-game. I read that those sounds exist for a lot of factions, but I don't know how to activate the feature. Any help will be appreciated.

It should be available if you enable sounds in the game and have the files installed. It's a separate package, except on windows.

Oh well then I'm afraid there's no simple answer because I do have the package installed.
I have the data and speech packages installed from the 0.5.1.r1 .deb packages, and I have the binary which is my own compildes development version, configured with the data dir set as /usr/share/games/vegastrike.
I'll have to determine why I don't get them speech sounds.

I think nope, but I'd have to start a new campaign fresh to be sure beyond the slightest doubt. Regardless, I've fought countless Nicanders, Charillus, Agesipolis and the like but I have yet to hear the first line of alien speech resonate in my piloting helmet's speakers.

I am having same issue; Sound but no voice.
I don't hear Oswald.
I installed vegastrike-data_0.5.1.r1-2_all.deb, vegastrike-speech_0.5.1.r1-2_all.deb, vegastrike-extra_0.5.1.r1-2_all.deb
on 64-bit Ubunutu 10.04.
I tried several sound settings in vssetup.
Any help appreciated.

Interesting. Can you capture stdout and stderr and attach them here?
Maybe the package is installing the files in the wrong location... that'd show up in the logs.

I don't see a clue there. I checked the code, and there doesn't seem to be a logging entry for failure to load a sound (oops). Will have to fix that.
In the meanwhile... do make sure you have the files in /usr/share/games/vegastrike/sounds/com_tutorial_oswald/, and /usr/share/games/vegastrike/communications/sounds

Nope, I don't have either of these folders.
I guess it's a packaging issue. We must be getting close. Look at this:
dpkg -L vegastrike-speech
And so on and so on, all files are unpacked at the root of the data folder apparently. Issue with the .deb package?

I confirm the fix using vegastrike-speech_0.5.1.r1-3_all.deb, both for Oswald and the faction speech sounds.
I think I'd like speech sounds to sound a little more scratchy overall. I don't know, maybe like in the beginning of this movie (just to give you an idea):
