don't worrie I'm still here but the conversation is realy leaning to becoming a new version that duz not have any unnessarry content so im just waiting until the gamemakers agree to take it out in another/next version (if that ever happens). But right now i could make my own game just like this (Accept with content of my complaint).

Glad that you figured out how to modify the game 8) since that is the main principal of Open Source Software that the user can change any program to do what he/she wants if they have the skill to do so. if you have any problem with doing the modification just post and we will walk you though the changes.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I don't think going into all that detail is really necessary, however leveraging "mods support" we could have mods adding all that "optional" content. That would be a generic and easily managed way of doing all this. People with custom requirements would only create their own mod, or ask for one to be built.
But going back to the lack of need for such an in-depth review, thing is right now "objectionable material" is anything but clear or agreed upon.
I myself find no kind of "socially agreed objectionable material" really objectionable. Why can't kids see sexually explicit scenes on TV when they can constantly see references to policemen abusing of and murdering people? However true that may be, that scene only teaches violence and unfairness. It's a harsh lesson better given to grown kids, however somehow people think sex is worse.
So, I have a point. There are widely accepted (though highly irrational) categorizations for "objectionable" material. One of them is sexually explicit content (to varied degrees). Another one is violence (in many forms), and another is illegal activities. We should, IMO, focus on those, and leave the rest for per-user customization.

And Pirate: DIY doesn't mean DIY without help, you can ask for it if you need of course, as Loki said.

To rephrase my previous post more succinctly:

There are two tasks, both informational, and both incomplete, which we (as developers or as the community) have some responsibility for addressing.

Firstly, we should, in a reasonable location, make available a concise summary (format... well, that may still require more discussion, but it's not really key) of the manners of content and gameplay that the VS dataset and game contain.

Secondly, we should, as open source developers, have, in a reasonable location, adequate documentation on which aspects of the dataset and gameplay can be reasonably changed and how.

----

We have much of the second already, just not perhaps organized for the benefit of mods of the sort discussed here.

The first, has really yet to be addressed in any adequate fashion. I think Klauss is correct in that we can probably select the most likely hot-button categories without spending ages in deep thought. I still believe that "acceptability of content" is complicated: there are at least as many standards as there are communities around the globe, and in practice, as many as there are people, but for practical purposes we will almost certainly do reasonably well to focus on some standard set of bugaboos. We just shouldn't delude ourselves by thinking that any reasonably small set of criteria will prove universal.

I think Pirate was talking about releasing a modified version of this game on his own. And that's perfectly fine with me... that's what open source is about.

On the other hand, if he is indeed talking about making his own game, I would expect 5-10 years of solid work to make all the code and data....

As others have said, making your own game is no easy feat. However part of the reason the Vega Strike project exists is so as to create an open platform for other games in this genre, and as such it would not be impossible for you to modify the game to suit your needs.

LMAO, first time I ever opened the game, a friend was sitting behind me, and the first thing that pops up is the holovid splash screen advertisement, and he immediately asks me, "Is that a porno?!".

Many people believe sexually explicit material to be extremely offensive. Their opinions are justified by many reasons, and calling them "stupid" for those beliefs is wholly inappropriate. It is a very controversial topic, and society is not a very sheltered place.

Personally, I believe there are far-wider game selections for those who feel some content to be offensive. Many games are made for younger audiences with parent-oriented ideals in mind. I don't believe Vega Strike to be one of them.

...however, Vega Strike can be modified to remove much of it's content. I'm sure removing those Splash images is the most simple and effective way to solve your problem.

Still, i find it very funny. If your gonna start froom sctrach it will take you forever. The 3D models you need. They arn't made in under a day. There week long (sometimes month long) projects.

Why don't you just delete the offending pictures. How old is your child. I was confronted with naked woman by just goeing to the shopping center. There are bill boards, ads, tv programs, etc. etc... There are going to be more was of coming in contact withthis than a game. If the child is 13 or under then this game is not suitable for them to play (15 and under in Australia as there are drug, alcohol, piracy, and terrorism references)

Sorry, I can't find that game... and box.net seems to be a broken website (i.e. it biases its result based on the Referer header).

I can't find this game on Google:
Your search - u8gtln6y17 - did not match any documents.

If you have been reading this thread, you can see that there are a number of ways to solve this problem.
Given the diverse views and interests in the world (and many of the developers come from other countries around the world), it isn't easy to cater to a specific group of people.

However, this is an open community, and it is entirely up to you to make the decision to work on releasing a version of this game with whatever derivative content you like, and any of the developers (me included) would be happy to assist you with this job.

If every byte of the zip file was source code, you would still have 20% less code than Vega Strike, not including any data or compile scripts or object files. In that case it's an utter pity that it isn't online anywhere. In addition the other thing your game lacks is collaboration.

The reason Vega Strike has a community like this is that it accepts creations from anyone. The code and data of this game are very diverse, maybe from the order of a hundred of people overall (is this right? I would say 100 at the very least... but I can't bother to verify that right now).

Now, why did I spend 15 minutes writing a response to you? You didn't say much except a reply to a person who was trying to explain how much effort it takes to make a game like this. The developers who read this thread all said they would be happy if someone took the effort to write documentation on customizing the game.

As I said earlier you can try out Privateer Gemini Gold which is based off of Vega Strike if you can believe it. Wing commander privateer has an ESRB Everyone rating if that makes you feel any more comfortable.

well, it worked! I tried the game/demo/beta/alpha/pre-alpha/prof-of-concept
There is still a looooooooong way to go before you meet VS standards, but, well if you rather make your own game, then using the vega strike engine, I guess It's the way to go... only thing is that, VS already rule the world, so I can't see why you wouldn't use the VS engine...

You can simply download the source code and compile and never even touch the data set...

Also, as the source and data is kept in SVN, you could download all the files you do want from the data set and exclude the rest...

Damn it, more fundies, some asshole did the same with openarena. Let me just put my opinion against yours and ask the devs to explicitly not change anything.

We're all human beings and your cult's values don't weigh more than mine.

So let's have a vote on this subject, before submitting to needles self censorship.

I don't think you have to worry... None agreed to censure anything... :)

Rather we suggested he create his own censured version... which is totally plausible! He didn't seemed interested in doing that, however... which is just sad... Vega Strike, is such an excellent program to mod! :D
