Err... yeah, well I suppose you can talk about other stuff as well, maybe?

Linux under Windows

Post by CubOfJudahsLion »

Before you ask, no, it's not Cygwin and it's not an emulator. It's a bit of a curiosity I've been playing with lately. I thought it could be useful to some folks here -- specially those who can't (or simply won't) have Linux-only systems for whatever reason.

"Cooperative Linux is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively."

Optimally... well, at least more optimally than an VMWare or any other solution based on virtualization or processor emulation (DSL+QEmu). These guys had what I think is the best idea: they use a modified Linux that implements OS services as a wrapper of Windows'. The offshot is that you have a slower Linux running on Windows as a service -- but other than that, your Linux programs will run NATIVELY.

Things get interesting if you have enough memory and install an X Server (Cygwin comes with one). Since coLinux sets up a virtual network adapter, it can 'see' your native system, and next thing you know, my Windows desktop is full with xterms, Linux Gimp and Linux Blender. You don't need to go this far, of course -- most of time all you'll want is to do a couple of quick things in Linux without rebooting.

Why don't you use VirtualBox and have an actual copy of linux running in a virtual machine inside of windows. I have Virtual box and VMware player running windows inside of linux and it is far mor secure. plus I have backups of the images in case the one image gets hijacked or virus contaminated. I even have tools to cut ands paste between sessions

there is also Xen and a few others as well as the one that Linus has picked to support virtual OS's at the kernel level.but as Cub mentioned this approach is not a virtual machine and great for those that can't or won't dual boot.

Enjoy the Choice :)
