Is there something that can be done about the random spammers that are posting obnoxious, sometimes offensive messages? They're quite obviously not anyone interested in the game, so why do we tolerate it?

The process of reviewing my e-mail has become reversed over the years. Now I SELECT ALL of my emails and then hand-pick the few important ones for DE-SELECTION before deleting. Filters notwithstanding.

Is this a general question about e-mail or the forums in particular?
I know you believe you understand what you think I said.
But I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

@mkruer: Forums. Not much we can do about our inboxes

@Cub: Sadly, I do the same.

where is this "spam" that you talk about. at the moment you have to log in to post. so if there is an account that is a known spammer, let me know. I will ban them for a few days till they get the hint or delete the account if the spam continues.

I kinda like 'em. They're so hilariously terrible, I just can't imagine who thinks these things would actually sell any products.

It looks like a mod has been deleting them after a bit. There's been stuff for pr0n, gay-pr0n, casinos, adult dating. Each one has been made with a different username.

@Ryder: They're already hilariously terrible in my inbox.

No, wait. Not hilarious. Just terrible.

But I do agree about the whole "who the hell buys this crap" except that I know of one, and he's an ex-client of mine...a firm believer in the "if it's on the Internet, it MUST be true" theory.

Ah, see, I think that's the difference, I don't get email spam in any meaningful quantity. Hence, I'm not bored of its awfulness already.

Yeah, I had some dork "steal" my "identity" and used it to post on several hentai/porn boards, so my old email address gets about 20 emails a day, plus my required ISP account.

Ugh, e-mail. All it takes is submitting your address to one less-reputable-than-you-thought company or site, and you've got spam on that address for eternity.

I'm thankful I run my own e-mail server... setting the protocol adherence requirement extremely high weeds much of it out. And I use a different address for every sign-up or mailing list. It paid off big-time the other day when I suddenly started getting a dozen spams a day on an e-mail I hadn't used for a year or so. (I think they deliberately held off selling their lists to spammers so people wouldn't realise it was them.) I just delete the e-mail alias, and poof, nothing.

One thing I'm working on is enforcing S/MIME on all incoming messages, and they have to come from known addresses, or they're sent to a special folder from where they get deleted automatically. That's for mail. Perhaps something similar can be done with the forums, with HTTPS, but it's quite a lot of work, and perhaps some people won't be able to setup their certificates right. Anyway, such a procedure would most certainly rule out bots (I don't know any bot that follows such a reigstering procedure where you get handed out a certificate to be used against the forum). But... that's a little too much work, ain't it?

What was the name of that software that had you counting things in an image to ensure you're not a mass mailer? It ran an SMTP server on your machine. Sadly, it's useless with most webmail providers.

To refer to the original thread topic: can the current board software be made to ask subscribers to copy a word from a noisy image?

Just as an reinforcement to the original message. Let me know if you see additional spam and I will remove then and any delete person(s) if necessary.
