They later discovered that those fireballs only formed in experimental conditions (ie: very controlled environments). In more real down-to-earth (or rather up-in-space-stations) conditions, fire behaved a little more like the flames we know, but in random directions (ie: not always going up). Red Planet featured that kind of fire balls if you recall.

the movie Event Horizon had some cool space fire. Also liked how they described it. Moved like a liquid.
