Decided to boot into my new fedora 16 install and lo and behold Network Manager works with my brother`s internet dongle And a thx to www2 for clearing my account here after I got into captcha hell So now I`m in the process of re-building my dev environment.And getting used to Gnome3 shell on a low res screen till I tweak Xorg.conf to handle 1920x1080 that my Acer S243HL can handle

On my Debian I've used nvidia-settings flawlessly to set Xorg up for my 1920x1080 screen, it takes care of the relevant bit of conf (which here is split into a conf.d folder now)
Check if Ubuntu has it too.
Oh, that of course implies using the proprietary driver...

Well Nvidia's settings does not pick up my monitor's native res because it's EDID is borked

Ouch! But take a look at this thread, it looks that setting HorizSync and VertRefresh to the proper ranges might be enough.
