Thank You From A New Player
I'm not sure this was the best place to post this, but I didn't see a catagory for new players.
I'm not a computer programmer, but I am a space sim enthusiast and pretty much have all the titles on my bookshelf. I am a fan of the Evochron Series and when I have the time, I play the X series. Actually while browsing the X forum, I came across a mention of Vega strike. Being the space enthusiast I am, I had to see what this game was all about. I went to the home site and downloaded the latest version 0.5.0. Because this game was free, and I'm use to shelling out bucks for a great space experience, I really didn't know what to expect. I guess my first thought was, if it's free, it can't be that good, and I was expecting the graphics to be crappy. I was even concerned about the stability of the game.
Boy was I surprised. I can honestly say this game is a master piece. For the first time, I "really" got the feel of what it would be like in space, not just from a newtonian aspect, but the interaction, looks, communications, space stations, travel, everything. There is no doubt this was a labor of love from an artistic standpoint.
My hat goes off to all the developers who worked so hard to get this game to this point.
I didn't have the pleasure of experiencing the earlier versions, but the 0.5.0 is absolutely fantastic, and I look forward to newer releases, as I know this game is just going to get better.
I'm not really up on the coding and everything that goes into a game, so, I won't be a stranger, and I look forward to some great dialogue.
Again Great Game,
-Knight

Re: Thank You From A New Player
Welcome Knight Rider! Thanks for the kind words to the developers of the game (not including me of course ) and all contributors (you can contribute too btw). Nice to hear you like it, I recommend you get the SVN (development) version of VS, as it has many additions to 0.5.0, like a tutorial with voice acting, as well as some factions having voices, too. A lot of other things as well.
now that you mention it, I think there should be a "new members" forum, too. I've seen it in a lot of other forums

I look forward to tring the SVN Version. Where can I find it to download it, and do I have to uninstall the version I have to try the new one?

No, you don't need to uninstall the version you have (though you might want to do it for HD size purposes, since the engine source code and vegastrike will be redownloaded). You might want to check the wiki for instructions on how to checkout SVN. For Ubuntu linux and some derivatives, check this and for OSX check this. What OS do you have BTW?Knight Rider wrote:I look forward to tring the SVN Version. Where can I find it to download it, and do I have to uninstall the version I have to try the new one?

I have Vista Home Premium. The 0.5.0 version is working fine on my system. I looked at the wiki page, not being a coder, this looks like greek. There's got to be an easier way to download the updates as in a patch format.

Damn. Unfortunately, I have only installed Subversion for Linux. Fortunately, I checked the wiki right now. There is an SVN Client for windows, TortoiseSVN. It appears to be a hell of a lot easier than Linux, so check this page and scroll down to the TortoiseSVN section.Knight Rider wrote:I have Vista Home Premium. Welcome Knight Rider running the svn version on windows is pretty simple really no need to get the source code and build your own binaries as the windows binaries are in the svn repo a bit out of date but there if you have any questions about the process just post

Re: Thank You From A New Player
Before I download and install Tortoise SVN, and follow these instructions, am I on the right track?
"Usage
Download and Install Tortoise SVN from http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org
Create a new folder in Windows Manager where you will download your modules (called Sandbox, SVN or similar working location name);
Within that folder, create another folder (VegaStrike);
Right click on the folder created and select SVN Checkout. This brings up the checkout configuration screen;
Input the URL of the repository into the dialog box:
https://vegastrike.svn.sourceforge.net/ ... runk/win32
You may also use the built-in repository browser to select the module you wish to check out.
Click OK to begin checkout of the module".

Re: Thank You From A New Player
That should get it all.It will be a big download as subversion includes a data base of changes so at any point if some update breaks something you can roll it back to on that works.One thing not in that how to is how to run the game without corrupting your local copy of the repository.That and there may be some issues on where it is with Vista and it's new security model so when you get the full checkout.Right click on the \Sandbox\Vegastrike\data folder in the context menu pick TortoiseSVN-->Export pick some place in Program Files as destination this will export a copy of the data tree without the data base do the same with the \Sandbox\Vegastrike\bin folder but the destination is inside the new folder in Program Files hopefully that will keep Vista from objecting too much

Re: Thank You From A New Player
Hi,
I have completed all steps and have the full checkout. I right clicked on the data and bin folder and attempted to export to program files, and I keep getting, "The system cannot find the path specified". Is there something I need to do?
Thanks,
Knight

Re: Thank You From A New Player
Not sure i wasn't the one clicking the mouse but you may need to have admin privileges in Vista if you define the destination in Program Files.

Re: Thank You From A New Player
There should be no need to uninstall and what we are trying is copying not installing as VS does not write to the registry which may be the issue as Vista may not consider it a program silly but since i don't run Vista myself i don't know for sure hopefully one of the guys who does can enlighten us.

When you say you just picked up a folder from your desk top, exactly what did you do to add the updates to the game?tfc_generalKMK wrote:i am running vista however i just picked a folder on the desktop so i don't know if vista has a problem downloading it to a program file

Re: Thank You From A New Player
well to start off with i made a svn folder on the desktop put a folder inside that called vegastrike then i opened up the svn folder right clicked on vegastrike (the new folder) and selected SVN checkout then use the url provided by the wiki (which i believe was given in a earlier post on this thread and then it will just download and then you can run setup from the folder and then run vegastrike.exe right from that new folder you don't even need to formally install anything or uninstall the old .5 version
edit: incase you can't find it the url to enter in for the download is https://vegastrike.svn.sourceforge.net/ ... runk/win32

Re: Thank You From A New Player
Oh well, I gave it a good try. The stable version seems to work great on my system, even the graphics are high caliber, but when I try to play the SVN version from the folder, it's just not acting right. It won't go to full screen, the graphics are acting up, and I even can't use the keyboard functions for some reason.
If anyone knows how to update the stable version with the updates, I think that's what's going to work for me.
Thanks again,
Knight

They actually use different binaries so that may not work at all have you had a look at the two log files stdout.txt and sdterr.txt they may give an indication when compared to the ones from the stable version.

well the fullscreen problem will be solved just from running setup.exe in the bin folder of svn and adjusting your settings
