Cap ship idea

I was just reading about the new star trek online game and they have a good idea I think can be applied to the cap ships. Make the ship multie role requring crews. Like have a guy take control of engineering so he could supply more power to say shields or engines or even have the repair droids on key areas. Even hire people to man the turrets cause if your getting hit with3 or 4 different fights, a human can focus on more important fighters than a computer ai could. I know if the mission 50,000 or more I would do it, if the ship is hauling million credits in cargo, you may a quartar of your money but at least your ship and cargo would make it there intact

extend it ( perhaps) with different characters with differing skill levels and wages.
Pay less for inexperience pay more for experience - tho this could be randomised and tied in with the bar.
AI crew members check starship tycoon as a baseline in terms of ideas. Guess it might be a bit hard to program given the vs engine but a longer term idea

Of course cause even though the player might have 100 kills in a turret, his price for his services could be five times of that of someone that has only 3 kills. Same would go with a fighter escorts too. Basically just go into a chat room or post on a bulliten when you need help or post that your willing to lend your services to a cap ship

How about integrating 1st person to walk in bases and larger ships, planets. Instead of clicking through some screens to get to your destination, just walk there. With the idea of planetary flyaround comes the idea of walkaround, fight around as soldier, mercenary or do whatever. Mutliple players as crew on a capitalship could do some jobs... "red alert all hands to battlestations"-style
since starsiege tribes i'd like the idea to use a repair-beam for indoor repairs and use a jet-pack to fly around in space or on planets.
Well think about all the shooter-games and you'll find much more ideas
Another game that has some interesting views would be Battlecruiser Millenium, where you can walk on planets and have your capital ship with crew (like wished above). But overall the game is boring, because you haven't the freedom of choosing at any time what to do. If you played it you know what i mean (gone freeware awhile ago)
Too bad that these thoughts would be too much (re)work i think, maybe in the future with Vegastrike 2

First welcome on the forum.
The Walkable planets and bases is one of the most request here.
Current problem is the graphics rendering engine can handle can not handle this and reason that we move to ogre engine.

so what benefits will the new ogre engine have over the current engine that is used for VS

Ogre isn't an engine, as in it has no physics or anything, it's more like a rendering platform; but that makes it more versatile, because the devs can put their own physics in and have near complete control of what you can and cannot do within the game.
Right?
