I'll look and see how to do that... lol

Please, which vssetup ?
[melodie@squirrel Vegastrike]$ find . -name 'vssetup'
./vegastrike/vssetup
[melodie@squirrel Vegastrike]$ find . -name 'vssetup*'
./data4.x/documentation/.svn/text-base/vssetup.1.svn-base
./data4.x/documentation/.svn/prop-base/vssetup.1.svn-base
./data4.x/documentation/vssetup.1
./vegastrike/src/common/.deps/vssetup-common.Po
./vegastrike/src/common/vssetup-common.o
./vegastrike/setup/src/c/.deps/vssetup-setup.Po
./vegastrike/setup/src/c/vssetup-setup.o
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/vssetup-file.o
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/vssetup-general.o
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/.deps/vssetup-display_gtk.Po
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/.deps/vssetup-file.Po
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/.deps/vssetup-general.Po
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/.deps/vssetup-central.Po
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/vssetup-display_gtk.o
./vegastrike/setup/src/include/vssetup-central.o
./vegastrike/vssetup
[melodie@squirrel Vegastrike]$
Must I understand that I should take :

Code: Select all

./vegastrike/vssetup
put it in (which bin folder ? There are quite a few in the systems).

Code: Select all

./data4.x/bin
this one folder ?

then a link (with ln -s) from
./data4.x/bin to ./data4.x ?

How complicated ! :D

Well, I can do that, and I'd say an answer about how it goes in the files to edit would be ok, for me too...
Thanks anyhow.

I do it all with the GUI(Gnome) in my case and the links to data4.x as well so it's not that complicated  as for which vssetup the one you just made or any one of them as it has not changed since the update to GTK 2.0

Enjoy the Choice :)

Well, the thing is when it comes up to gui's, people tend to think they make it more simple, but I don't think it is : differences from one gui to other, from one distribution to other, whereas the ways to do things in console are always the same, whatever distribution or gui is used.

I can configure files in pure terminal mode even if my gui crashed or is not available, for any reason.

Thus, I'd be more interested to grab why this vssetup is installed in that directory and has to be put in another one + linked to the upper parent dir before being lauched ? Plus what features does it offer ? ;-)

It's not installed... The ./configure make system puts files in the vegastrike directory and you need to run it from a directory with vegastrike.config.

I think the main issue you are complaining about is that it should look in a series of directories, including things like:
.
..
../data4.x
data4.x
/usr/share/vegastrike
/usr/games/vegastrike
The engine itself looks in those places, so why not the setup program?

A past release had a shellscript to do this, but that caused a huge amount of confusion...

Ok !

No, I was not complaining, just wished to understand what the vssetup needed in order to function properly, and why it was not at the right place by default.

data4.x
/usr/share/vegastrike
/usr/games/vegastrike

Ok, and why does it need to be at same time in data4.x/bin and (with it's symlink) in data4.x ? Wouldn't it be enough in data4.x where the vegastrike.config stands ?

Here a few results...
First try :

after setting with vssetup, with music (all linux sounds). Normal launch in gdb, from the Vegastrike/vegastrike directory. No music loading. 100% load on CPU, response from apps are slow. I also have changed from xfce4 to fluxbox, to make it even lighter...

Second try :
with the same setting with vssetup, with music (all linux sounds).
starting from ~/Vegastrike/data4.x/bin

$gdb vegastrike.bin

(the one made by hellcatv yesterday)

"Failed to load song ../music/loading.ogg"

still 100% cpu load...

Third try, without sound, starting from ~/Vegastrike/data4.x/bin
with the vegastrike.bin made by hellcatv yesterday.

The CPU load still comes 100% and the stack is :
(gdb) bt full

I did some screenshots, starting from vegastrike-vssetup.png to vegastrike-vssetup5.png in chronologic order.

The very first one is how I found it when I just launched it. The second, vegastrike-vssetup2.png, is what I did on it right away. The third is how it came out just after that, the fourth shows I put the sound away, while I had stopped Vegastrike processes and while cpu load looked quiet again.
The last shot, vegastrike-vssetup5.png, is about the result without sound, with 16 bits (I hope this time !) running with the vegastrike.bin.

Hoping it will help... :)

As to the setup program it's hard to get it working for many people... what I meant is that it should be changed to look in the same places that vegastrike itself looks in to make it easier to run.

So the thing that solved it was 16 bit color? Or what did you change to get it functioning?

What happens if you just do what it was you changed in the 5th screenshot but turn everything else back on?

Well, I just explained it step by step : you ought to compare vegastrike-vssetup.png to vegastrike-vssetup2.png as the vegastrike-vssetup2.png shows what I changed after I launched vssetup ! (first sight represented by vegastrike-vssetup.png)
What happens if you just do what it was you changed in the 5th screenshot but turn everything else back on?
I don't get your point : I didn't see any difference from the preceeding tests. No more music or sound, no less CPU load... so what's the clue ? :?

Oh I forgot to launch it out of gdb : should I try ? if so, which mode : with normal run or with vegastrike.bin ?

maybe I'm not understanding--once you make it to the main menu it may just spin the CPU at 100% for no reason...
did you try moving around the mouse and selecting the Campaign option? did everything work after that point?

No, it's too slow to give me possibility to select anything. The cursor goes to and fro by itself.

I might try again, as I deactivated a few unused processes in my machine, some applications that I use only once a while. (Using Fluxbox, deactivate server+mysql+printing daemons... I'll end up without GUI : no feature to play framebuffer mode ? ;-) ... )

I'll give the results here. :)

At same time, you can notice there is still no music.

I stopped some services to get more ressources available, did an svn up to 11590, did a 'make' and launched vegastrike the classic way.

I first changed from 'no music' to 'all linux sounds' in vssetup. No difference, and when it comes to the interface where it's possible to clic on 'campaign', the curser jumps like a grasshopper.

I just did a second try...

The vssetup looks like it does nothing ! I changed the resolution to 800x600 and the windows still comes out in 1280x1024 the way I configured it in the vegastrike.config file...

How is that vssetup utility supposed to work ? Shouldn't it change the content of the configuration file in the bloc of texts that are concerned with the changes ?

ace123 and hellcatv, would you consider coming back to the post where I was asking how to deal whith the bloc of texts in the config file and asked for precise information on how to do it the right way ?

(I really don't like graphical interfaces for configurations... )

I tried again the vegastrike.bin from the data4.x directory, and here is the result in screenshots, again :
Here with the content from launch console :
vegastrike-11591-ErrorNoRoomsSpecified.png

Here with an additional glxgears running (for a change, and because I'm going to boot Ubuntu, to compare what happens) :

I now rebooted to Ubuntu 7.04.
I had a 11497 revision, so I took pleasure running it : music, sound, all working ! Even within gdb it was neither too slow nor freezing or anything.

For pleasure, the content of the stack of the 11497, before I try the 11591 here in Xubuntu:

so strange--it works on one of your linux installs and not on the other?
I'd be curious what's different between the two--different nvidia driver revs maybe?
what does glxinfo says--is it exactly the same for everything?

would be good to be able to advise people about how to change their setup so it works...

also thanks for your persistence--at least you can play now :-D :-D

Maybe, or why not the implementation of the last mesa ? or ? I think I'll try to post a message on the very official archlinux.org forum after the next try with 11591 rev under Ubuntu.
what does glxinfo says--is it exactly the same for everything ?
It says the nVidia card under Archlinux (rev 11591) is a snail, and under Ubuntu (rev 11497) it's a good honest horse. (Not a race horse yet, but the CPU is about 60% instead of 100% preceedingly).
I'll post a shot of the glxgears datas when I'll launch 11591 under Xubuntu just next.
would be good to be able to advise people about how to change their setup so it works...
agreed.
also thanks for your persistence--at least you can play now :-D :-D
Well, I'm happy to read you appreciate my persistence. :)
In fact my main goal would be to get a playable Vegastrike in Archlinux. None is packaged actually, or even available as a pkgbuild script. So the next version coming is a good story.

I find it as fun to try to help debugging... as to play. (Playing is hard too, I'm just discovering that also :D )

Very likely it's one of the AI players that is undocking, not you.

Also, could you update and see if you still get the "no rooms specified" error?

If so, paste the last 20-30 lines of the console.
A screenshot doesn't matter, but I would be interested in everything after the "Traceback (most recent call last)" line.

Well, update done, make did I invoke, and well, music works, all works, it's sort of fast, sort of because the game goes with shakes during the ship travel. Thats to say the numbers corresponding to the distances go fast, all of a sudden are almost stopped, go fast again and so on.

the screenshots look great--not sure why the numbers would be different.

also have no idea why the same hardware would work nicely for one distro and disastrously for another--- must be some slightly different video driver version (because my statically built binary doesn't use any other different libs except pthread!)

Is the music.cpp (in the actual revisions) the same now as it was before you made me change it ?

If yes, I'd put it back the way it was before, the reconfigure and build with today's version.

I looked at mesa, although the packages names are slightly different, the versions are the same number. Might be the nVidia driver as you said, but how could it be ? I'ts all the proprietary version.
nvidia 100.14.11
nvidia-utils 100.14.11

under Archlinux. Under Ubuntu... I don't know, all the install was automatic.

I found theses differences in /usr/lib, if it could be of any help whatsoever...
$ pwd
/mnt/Ubuntu/usr/lib/
$ sudo find . -name '*nvidia*'
./libnvidia-tls.so.1
./libnvidia-cfg.so.1
./mplayer/vidix/nvidia_vid.so
./libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.9631
./xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
./nvidia
./tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1

./python2.5/site-packages/RestrictedManager/nvidia.pyc
./python2.5/site-packages/RestrictedManager/nvidia.py
./directfb-0.9.25/gfxdrivers/libdirectfb_nvidia.so

Updating to revision 11605 is done. Let's see next... :)
