Problems running linux_vegastrike-0.4.3 on SUSE 9.3

Trying to build your own version of Vega Strike and having problems? Unix users, paste your config.log here (stderr output alone is not helpful).

Problems running linux_vegastrike-0.4.3 on SUSE 9.3

Post by Rob.Bowen »

Before we start, I am a bit of a noob, but I have searched the forums many times to no avail.

Whenever I try to install this game, I end up back at the same error:

checking for GL/gl.h... no

and that's the end of the party. I have tried to find a package for SUSE 9.3 (or even 9.x) that contains this but am having no luck. This is confusing, because as far as I can make out, other things that require GL headers are working.

Here is the output from the installer:

I love the game since I played it at a mate's and am now even considering the unthinkable - using a Windows box! Please save me from Microsoft!

Do you have an NVidia card?
If so... did you download and install the NVidia driver?
If not, you may want to start by doing that. You'll need to, anyway, to get any kind of acceptable performance.

The driver may come with its own GL/gl.h (I think it does)

I have an ATI Radeon 7000/Radeon VE graphics card. As far as I remember, this worked from the off (i.e. it used an already present driver).

Does this help?

Actually, it doesn't help. It would help if it said:

I have an NVidia6xxx, and I didn't install the drivers.

But if you have all the drivers, things could get nifty. You'll have to either make configure find GL/gl.h (which you must have somewhere), or install a copy of it. In any case, I can't help: Sorry, I have no experience with linux and 3D accelerators, my linux box is on a PPro 200mhz - needless to say, VS won't run on that one.

If you use an ATI card < 9250;
You can use the open R200 driver included in xorg, this gives decent enough 3d performance. To meet cvs's needs: Install xorg devel / mesa devel , 'm not sure how suse names it's packages. (Mesa is the opengl library on linux)

If you use ati > 9250 or nvidia;
You need to install proprietary closed source drivers, and aassociated opengl, and opengl dev packages.

goodluck.

That was great, thanks. I had the base xorg packages but not the devel ones.

However.

We now have a different message. My installer now ends with:

:( @rob.bowen you are still missing several pkg from what i see lest start with the first jepg lib is usually called libjpeg with the version number your distros tag for pkg files it may be part of the support files for the gimp agian you may need the dev one as well. i am a noobie to linux also about 10 mo with the fedora. under suse i would check YAST's pkg manager or if you don't get CLF open a console and type rpm -q libjpeg that should tell you if you have it. you might look at the wiki pages too see if you are missing anything else. the compile cycle is not very forgiving. and if i remember suse is useing gcc4.0 so well it get to the pre-proceeor don't freak at the pages and pages...... :lol: it will eventually compile 8) then grab your joystick and lauch :wink:

Enjoy the Choice :)

loki, you are an absolute star.

I was gonna wait for it to finish compiling before I wrote this, but you weren't kidding about the pages and pages :lol:

Hopefully that will be me up and rockin'

Thanks again

make -s

Post by balloyd1 »

make -s
gets rid of the pages and pages of text on the screen. It can speed build times up considerably.
