New Transport model, if anyone would like one

Post by zergnerd »

5820 Polys

Class: Super transport

Anyone got ideas for a name?

You can get the Blender file here:

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/4/19/ ... port.blend

I may eventually get around to skinning it, but that probably won't happen real soon. I usually prefer modeling. So if you love texturing, feel free.

The propellant tanks are deliberately geodesics rather than low-poly spheres.

Enjoy.

It's a nice technical concept.
First of all, it needs serious cleaning. Every poly that won't be visible in the game should be gone.
Second: It needs splitting smoothing groups. There is a tutorial here: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/ ... oth_Groups

Third and most important: you won't get away with claiming that you don't enjoy texturing. As far as I know, no one really likes uv-mapping and texturing. And because of this I think that it'll be either that you texture it yourself, or let your beautiful work to be abandoned.
Hope I didn't sound harsh here. :)
There are no stupid people on Earth; they are only alternatively thinking.

Nice ship. 100% on all of what Kangaroo says, though. As a matter of fact, uv-mapping and texturing is like 90% of the work, and texturers are about 10 times harder to find than modellers; so I'd be very skeptical anyone's going to jump to it.

Well, I figured out enough texturing to do the propellant tanks, though I'm still not fully satisfied. I guess there's a bit of a learning curve.

HEY! Good job! Talking about the smoothing groups and all that.
Question: Did you do a UV-unwrap? Multiple textures are a nono for games; game models need to use a single, UV-mapped texture.

Though, there's a script for Blender that puts textures togethr into one, but I never tried it, and I'm rather skeptical. Here's some other texturing tutorials:
