I need a model dump too :P

Post by Phlogios »

The Patterson pictures are up! Feel free to say whatever you want about the shape. If you like the general idea, but don't like the dimensions, tell me! Tell me if you don't like the idea at all too, but if you do, you have to tell me what it should look like.

The info on the Patterson says it should look old.

Given the right texturing, that could look rather old. Maybe beat-up, scraped-up, scorched, and corroded... another question is: How old? Old as in "I remember when they first discovered SPEC/Jumpgates" or Old as in "I remember when we had to use rotating sections for artifical gravity"

The former, definitely doable.
The latter, would require adding/changing parts of the model.

"Though the base design shows its age, it has aged well and survived upgrade cycles without full redesign. Nonetheless, it is not heavily used outside of Andolian systems, with non-Andolian systems in the Protectorate being more commonly served by Camus class patrol frigates. This appears to be a matter of cost as much anything else, as the heavier Patterson class vessels are overprovisioned for regions without active hostilities."
I don't know if it looks Andolian, though.

More detail! :-) Seriously, it looks like a good decent base, but it's meant to be a capship, but currently doesn't really look cap ship size. Armour, hangers, weapons platforms, and in general 'greebles' would go a long way to making it feel big :-)

As for looking andolian, not my area...

That what you were after?

Well, a frigate is not really a capship with hangars in it, is it? Take a look at the frigates in HomeWorld 2. :D I could make it longer, and put some more details on it.

Well, I didn't intend for it to be covered in hangers, but as the VS universe doesn't have anything in the way of transporter beams you'd still need a way of getting people and cargo on and off when out and about :-)

The length doesn't matter too much, but ya, details details details :-)

If that indented area in the front is intended to be a windowed area, then the scale is off by quite a bit. See http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forum ... 80&start=6 for discussion of the Camus, Protectorate Frigate size, and Andolian attitudes toward "windows-as-we-know-them" (not, by scare quotes, to be confused with optically transparent/translucent sensor coverings).

For existing examples of Protectorate capship stylings, here's what we have example-wise:
Cruiser:
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forum ... c&start=18
Destroyer (heavier Klk'k influence):
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/Vessel:Nietzsche

To echo earlier comments - the base geometry could survive some additional detailing, easing pressure on the texturing for the task of ensuring visual distinctiveness.

Updated! Same link as before, new pictures are: PattersonB.jpg, PattersonB2.jpg, PattersonB3.jpg
Andolian attitudes toward "windows-as-we-know-them" (not, by scare quotes, to be confused with optically transparent/translucent sensor coverings).
Are you saying that the Andolians have windows as WE know them (bullet-proof transparent armor at the cockpit or as THEY know them?)
As I'm not sure, I just made them smaller for the moment.

I added a bump in the bottom-front for weapons (I was thinking 1 turret-mount on each side and maybe torpedo-tube on the front), a huge door in the front (in which you may put whatever you put in frigates), 2 huge pipes in the bottom, 2 "things" in the back to make it look larger, a cylinder which I intend to texture the same way as Oblivion did on the Hawking (with a white-ish glow in the middle) and I made it much longer. I don't remember putting anything else there, but maybe I did, don't be shocked.

I enjoy the choice of using Wings3D for the unwrapping part. :D If people think it looks alright. I'm still dreaming of my first included ship :P

How one makes to add image has his message I cannot include them in the message to explain me and I would stop polluting the gallery for the screen shot (the only means which I have to find to forward to you the image.)

PATTERSON Andolian Escort Frigate

Post by pyramid »

It seems that this model has undergone a review since the last comment by jackS. It would be great to have some new commentary on the improved concept and to have feedback from Phlogios if he's still willing to continue work on this model after jackS update.

It seems, the concept is open for further development. Some authoritative hints on the further development road to be taken:
Current concept design is not detailed enough in the front half, and could even serve to have more detailing on the rear half. It needs retro thrusters, radiator fins, lateral thrusters, lateral launch missile tubes, turret pylons, etc - you can't currently look at the craft and get a sense of either purpose or scale. Adding things like a pinnace and pinnace dock - perhaps a dedicated parasite attachment not usable a s normal docking point - cargo doors for resupply and docking, docking tubes... it just needs more details. Simple and boxy is fine as a high-level design idea for the Patterson, but see Oblivion's Hawking for ideas on how to make a design with fundamentally simple geometry visually very interesting.
