I like it.
It looks a little like a Black Bird (an old USAF's stealth aircraft), but it is surely a coincidence.

I agree with Kangaroo, those engines definitely have too much polies. A simple cylinder (with about, umm 18 sides?) smoothed would ahve sufficed. especially a ship as small as this.

Songs of thoughts only I can hear,
Leave me be to sleep forever,
To dream my dreams,
And sing my hymns,
Of things that will never be...

Tug/Rescue Utilitiy Vehicle
thing jutting out of the front is going to be the airlock. (with locking plates and cutters) things in back are magnetic clamps to grab a ship and tug/tow it along. the cockpit portion is actually 2 (standing) decks (to give an idea of size)
frontish

still needs some cleaning up and some more doodads

Is this officially a tug?
Love those clamps. Needs engines. Finally, this is one rare case when "wing"-mounted engines would be justified, to avoid hitting the towed ship with the exhaust.

was thinking of jutting the engines outwards at an angle from the ship. sort of like a 4 way 'V'.. the start of them are there. its officially a tug.
I'll do varients and see the reactions to them (winged, forward engine mounts, and the 4 way 'v' thing )

haven't come up with a winged yet. haven't thought of anything that doesn't take away from the general feel of the ship

I'm in the act of texturing it right now. by and by, can the thrust be set out as angles from a unit? (so far, I've only ever really seen thrust thats -z from the unit)

No, it can't. But don't let it bother you, that can be fixed (and should) codewise. Only reason it hasn't is that it needs a change in the dataset - an uncomfortable change, and right now there's no unit that actually needs it. If there ends up being one such unit, I bet the fix will come soon after.

this is how it looks now. the problem I'm having is with the major seams.
the lesser seams I can do with single pixel (width) black lines.

You're still mostly applying a single pattern to the whole ship.
Do take a look at strangelet's tutorials. The idea is to make the skin agree with geometry, show features where geometry does (and in some other places too, of course), and mostly (unless it's Aeran ), make it look like it's a complex, multi-part built thing, rather than a molded frame.

hmm.. whats the URL to strangelet's tutorials?
@klauss
Ohhh.. I haven't set the different major plates or anything like that for it (side a goes to side b, ect) the problem I'm having with the big seams.. is that when I try to make them, they come out looking like painted lines.. though, I'm also having this problem where it looks just fine in gimp, but once applied to the ship, its flattish.

Indeed, that looks like the ship is wearing pajamas.
You need to decide what material each part of the ship is made of, and what extra details you want to add, such as armor plate seams, pipes, rivets, rust, damage, dirt, smoke marks, whatever; and then figure out how to represent such materials. Take a look at Dual's Hornet for WCU:
http://img501.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... ot2nx9.jpg
http://img521.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... ot1df2.jpg
Using photographs in a collage of real materials is not out of the question, yet not enough of itself, since a photograph doesn't distinguish between diffuse and specular components, for example.
If you're VERY lazy, just paint it a solid gray and add a bit of random noise to it. That would be much preferable to tiling a fall fashion pattern onto it.
I'm not sure where strangelet's tutorials are, but there are a few unwrapping and texturing tutorials here:

Ok, I think there is a misunderstanding here. this isn't the final product. here is my problem.. first, when I create the larger seams between sections, it doesn't look like a seam. it looks either like a painted line, or a dirty spot. second, the details aren't coming out in the model.
na na chalakada .. I'll figure it out
-=added on=-
hah.. just read the fall fashion portion.. missed that before.. oddly enough, the uv map has the textures.. it doesn't look like the newest craze in flannel shirts. that would be what I mean by, 'the details aren't coming out'

when you folks do your maps, do you use the 1024x or do you start off with a larger (like say, 2048+x) then when you are done, go back and resize it to the 1024x?
