fighter model

Post by GAlex »

another lightweight fighter model to submit at Your precious attention.

it may be a new sickle, or maybe a vendetta. the lacks of descriptions in the wiki section doesn't help much.

The model shows great promise in the geometry, but I think you might have problems unwrapping the small parts on the upper engine (?)

Hope it gets textured :)

Cool.
I bet it can be unwrapped. Worst case: paint them black ;)
(BTW: I do think painting them black would look nice - the small parts only, would be nice, and saves you the trouble of having to nicely unwrap those weird tris).

Cool 8)

One thing: DONT create grillwork and linework in the mesh itself. I'm referring to the engine grills. Same problem as with the armor plates in light gemini's Camus - those can be made with texture quite easily. Doing details in places like that also make the model a lot harder to unwrap. Keep the models simple, and texturing will be a breeze. The rest of the ship looks great tho, and very easy to unwrap if you set your mind to it. Just the grills. :P

mmmmh.. this ships looks to have an own personality. It reminds me a bit the retro looking ufo interceptor ships. Not that I dont like it (or ufo interceptor). It looks nice :P

You know, speaking of the grillwork . . . Does anybody have a suggestion as to why it might be needed on a spaceship? I can see the point in an atmospheric vessel, which this looks like it could be, but for a purely non-atmospheric one, any ideas?

Edit: not to critisize, of course. I have to say I really like the basic layout. It has a good, solid, simple design.

Grillwork in space is for heat disapation. The big plates on TIE fighters are accually radiators not solar panels.

Really? I always believed/readed they are solar panels. If not how could one explain they use ion engines without any place to put a power generator? maybe im wrong and have forgotten that.

I'm actually working on UV-Mapping and Texturing, but my spare time amounts about 2-4 hours a week!!!.

I've wiped out all the radiators from the model as to reproduce them in texture (as oblivion rightly said).

as for the model it was intended to be a small fighter best suited to escort in large number capital ships (think at the Vipers in Battlestar Galactica) and to perform missions in squads, not alone. the radiators are necessary both for dissipation and for, sure, atmo-flying when it will become a feature of VS.
actually the top thruster should only be fired in-atmo, while the three standard thrusters are for space movement.

given it's geometry, this vessel should be able to perform very fast accelerations and should have manouvrability ratios at the top.
on the ohter hand, it's smallness limit it's firepower and it's energy generation capabilities, so in my thought it shouldn't have a jump drive.

it's always possible to stock a bunch of these ships in a capital one and then launch the fleet in proximity of the target.
