Generic Spaceport Backgrounds

Hi. I got tired with UV mapping and ship modeling for a bit, so decided to make some backgrounds.

Critiscisms are welcome. :) But please don't ask for perfection, hehe. :lol:

I'll be making a Bar, a Plaza, a Trade room/Bazaar, and a Hangar, probably more if I can. Meanwhile here're 2 shots of the docks, and a generic corridor.

Your skill with texturing got up another fantastic base. 8)

Does your 3DStudio have any global illumination settings? That way you could evade the super-sharp shadows.

Yep. It does, but... :) I sharpened the shadows intentionally. Why is it bad?

I think it looks a bit strange. Why not combine the ambient light and shadows with the sharp shadows from the sun source?

Wery Wery Nice!

I think the shadows are close to perfect.
Sun shadows tend to be sharp when looked from a distance, the "softness" of sun lighting is mostly on ambient occlusion stuff and radiosity - try to enable those, but leave the shadows sharp as they are.

Gorgeous.

Some more inside shots would be needed, though, and you may want to loose that ship there - ships should be rendered separately, if you with, to allow animation. Ships, people, anything that might move goes in that category.

Some needed inside shots: trading room, bar, ship dealer / ship upgrade & repair.

Okay.

I thought you meant the interior shots.

The dock render seems alright to me. It's morning, so I thought shadows should be like that. But okay, I'll go for fuzzier shadows and I'll get rid of the ships.

I finished the bazaar render anyway. Looks bad :P but not that bad. It has links to the trade spots, but not the trade spots themselves. I'll gte to work on the mentioned areas. tnx

Here's the bazaar. Actually more of an empty street. lol. :lol:

Ambient occlussion is all it needs.
So the ground near objects looks darkish.

Great job.

Beautiful work, Oblivion. Some of the game's planetside graphics scream 'placeholder' and desperately need replacing.

For your next trick, how about some 'frontier outpost' style backdrops for those harsh, barely-populated arid and rocky worlds?

@Klauss:

I don;t really know how to use 3dsmax's ambient occlusion. But If you mean ambient occlusion with directional lighting, maybe I can do that. I'll try it. :wink:

@light_gemini

hehe. thnks.

@stevie_d:

I tried that once, when I was still green in modeling. But yeah, after I finsih this I'll go for frontier scapes. :)

Do not know what happened to these Fendorin but if they are lost it's a major goof on our part.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I don't think I ever saw these -- they aren't in my backup folder either, but they do look amazing. These really should have gone with the 0.5 release.

Thanks for pointing this thread out Fendorin.

Looks great :)

If you find the bazaar too empty, placing a bench or two to sit on might break up the emptiness.

Did you email Oblivion?

not yet. Faster to ask here before sending out an email. Provided we still have a valid email address.

If that fails too, you can try contacting him through his profiles on the Angels Fall First: Planetstorm and Xonotic forums. He was active in those places more recently and most forums send out an email notification when someone receives a PM, so that is your best bet. In fact it looks like you can send him an email through the xonotic account explicitly as well.

Been playing around a bit how a spaceport in vegastrike could look like - in contrast to single landing platforms. Didnt find much about vegastrike faction architecture, though....

Looks nice...

The ships can be done in 3D and dynamically... did you know?

There's support for rendering arbitrary ships on base screens.

Yeah, I know. They dont look good on these planetary spaceport screens imho, cause they are rendered clear, without any haze or atmosphere effects and, mostly (or at least i havent managed to change it) with other lighting settings as the background pic. For the foreground it is OK, but not for the background. At least my 2 cents...
