If so....
Would it be possible to render the entire base over a background? Walking bases need much more development, but rendered static (or semi static) bases might kick up the feel of the game.

Yes, but that requires a little modification on the base API.

Right now, what's rendered is a specific unit. If you wanted to render base interiors, even static, the API would have to reference mesh files, rather than units (we wouldn't have full-fledged units to render).

I don't expect it to be a difficult task, though. It's been on the to-do list for a while now. With rendered bases, you could have camera movements that add a lot of spice, even if the base isn't fully walkable, the camera movements would be nice.

Then comes the content development.... *ugh* I do think it would make for nice visuals. And avoid the occasional landing from a dark area and having a well lit docking bay and a nearly black ship.

Just looking at some old contributed work, there is so much great stuff, I really wish this could be added to the game.
