Poll Part2: Voting gas giant surface textures

Post by pyramid »

..Continuation of the poll for the next 10 surfaces ...

Several (9) gas giant planet surfaces are due for replacement:

*gas_giant3.png
*gas_giant4.png
*gas_giant5.png

I am posting here a poll to select new replacement surfaces for gas giants. The winners of the poll will be committed to svn as soon as there can be seen favorites.

Please open the textures preview link in a new window or tab for easier reference when voting:

Those textures were created with POV-Ray using my own procedural routines. Out of the many samples I have selected those with personality and character. I hope you like them.

Please vote for your favorite.

Even though you have all gas giants here, I think something that resembles 164 (probably without the strata clouds) would be a great color and pattern as a desertish planet.

How much practice have you put into non-gas giants?

Appreciate your comments. After improving on gas giants textures, I will concentrate on rocky and carribean planets. I've put some efforts into earth-like planet surfaces, but still too little to be acceptable. As you suggested, I might use a bit of code from gas giants for the other types.

Though I voted 15, I must say both 5, 15 & 17 are very promising.
Mostly because I can add cloud shadow patterns to those ;)

Hm... after some thought, I can definitely do a lot with 1 too.

Oh... well... there's no favorite I guess, only shades of gray.

Yeah, they are all pretty much similar. Logically, using the same algorithm just the randomized portions become different (colors, stripes, turbulences, weather strength). With time, the procedures are being further improved and enhanced. Expect more planet types coming out after August.

Currently this pretty complex "marbles" use up all my processor time. 7-9 h per 2K res map on a Pentium 1.6GHz. Means...I can commit earliest next week.

I chose those with patterns that don't quite repeat tho. Colors can be changed anyhow.

The banding on some is has tiled (i.e. most of the planets with darker bands which shows the same pattern of gradience on its sides), and it becomes obvious. But really good work, and really ahrd to choose from, besides. Why not all of em?

tho I can't wait to see these actually shadowed and all in klauss's style. 8)

Right, looks like tiled, you can see this specially on 14, is however not really tiled but a repeat frequency I might have overdone. I'll improve this on upcoming surfaces.

For now we only need 9 new surfaces. In the future I'd like to create still many more different characters. ...just love creating planets....

Pretty curious too, to see them rendered with the new shady planets engine.
