there's a nice looking import export plugin for wings models in blender
Hey, great news!
I wonder whether it'll work with blender 2.26 (it's for blender 2.23) but I'll give it a try soon...

Because of the distro: I'm running Mandrake 9.1 which shouldn't be too different from 9.0
Our problems with wings are probably Mandrake related?
A very vague suspicion off course, but if anyone already running wings succesfully on Mandrake, I could drop this idea...

Before using these, however, note that the Blender export scripts only preserve UV mapping information when exporting to the Lightflow and trueSpace formats. UV won't export to Wings or anything directly convertable to xmesh.

For those who don't know, this means that Blender is OK for modelling but things intended for use in VS will need to be textured in Wings.

bzzt....wrong ;-)

there are some great obj import/export scripts here for obj import/export:
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/hoshbardam/OBJIO.zip
I use these for when I'm feeling up to modelling.....and I am sure that they do uv....but it's been a while so I don't remember exactly (ie don't shoot if I'm wrong).....I normally use texturiser for my smaller models anyway ;-)

I think they also complain about a line in the script file (for blender 2.26) ...just comment it out if it does and it will work fine :-)

I just tested my plugin (ver 1.3) with the 0.98.07a-version of wings
(though windows version) without problems.
The output is fine and no error occured.
Maybe somebody else can test it (0.98.07a/1.3) too with the mac and under linux.

I think i have found the reason for the error, but i am not sure, so:
@etheral walker: when exactly did it crash?
after clicking the export menu or later (ie after selecting a filename)?

maybe another way during yhe night

Post by etheral walker »

Well,
After a good night I tried someting, running wings windows over wine. Some huge refreshing problems, but as far as I can click on export as xmesh, it could be useable.
Naturally, I canot use the "lights "textures options in wings, then for now my models are not really marvelously textured.
In addition, bjorn send me a mail, you're exact Pontiac, he cannot help me
I will try to do something with cvs version of WineX, if it works I will put a little something in the wiki.
I see dead polygons....

Just found this links in the Wings3D Forum:
Wings-0.98.08e rpm for Mandrake 9.1
Wings-0.98.09 rpm for Mandrake 9.1
Especially the first thread is maybe of use for the compiling procedure.

I don't know if the RPMs work, and if they also work with other distributions, but it is worth a try ;-)

Thx, pontiac!
Wings-0.98.09 is running now, finally :D
It even don't need the path-giving commands as recommended on the wings3d side:
Simply /usr/bin/wings3d (in console) works.
I vote this for tip af the day! 8)

Pleased to help :D
Does the plugin work as expected?
And is the 0.98.09-version working stable?

Gimme some time, I'm a completely fresh wings user...
Already installed the plugin, though.
If you could tell me an easy way to determine whether the plugin works or not, I'll tell you.

No crash so far, but too early to say 'stable'.
Just did some simple objects and rendering only...

Here a simple test:
*) Just insert a cube
*) select: File-> Export-> Vegastrike.
*) Save the file.
*) Look at the erlang shell for errors.
*) rename the xunit-file and xmesh file to .....xml and open it in mozilla to check the xml-syntax

This could not work, even got no File-> Export-> Vegastrike entry.
Fortunately I found what's going on: Your .zip file installes everything with chmod 600.
That is wrong, all files need chmod 644 (like the other files in wings).
That's all.
Output from mozilla looks very good.
I guess I don't have to post it here, but I do if you think it's useful...

Thanks for testing.
Since no one tested it on linux until now i thought it will work on every OS just by extraction the files.
Unfortunately i don't know a way to add the file-permissions to the zip file (under windows). (anybody knows?)
Until i figure out a better way i will update the install instruction to mention the file-permissions.

If it didn't give an error it should be ok.

Also don't know a way under windows, but I made a corrected zip-file under Linux.
Interested?
It's about 300 Bytes larger than the origin (don't ask me why) and probably needs some testing under windows first.
If you want it, tell me a place for uploading. I also could send it as attachment to your private mail adress, if you like...
P.S.: I didn't change the root permission, only the read attributes (chmod 644) in the content.

I did some additional testing to see what and why happened to your zip-file.
Just copied the file to windows (98SE), unzipped and rezipped the file.
Then I copied it back to linux and expected the same result as from your original file.
That was not the case!
Now the unzipped files all have 666 attributes, which means read/writable to everyone.
Though a security problem, this should work at least.
Remains the question, why does your winzip produce 600 files?
I don't know much about newer windows versions, only that later versions got some unix-like permission system.
What kind of windows are you using?

I've managed to use the cygwin shell for setting the permission tags with a script like this:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
cd wings-plugin
find -name *.beam -exec chmod 644 \{\} \;

zip -r9 test *
The next release will be packed like this.

For testing i uploaded a (unofficial) repacked version of the 1.3b-release

i'm back

Post by etheral walker »

well,
I tried with the rpms, it's not ok, I think the porblem come from libesdl.
I tried the unnoficial xmesh plugin, same problem :)
At the opposite, I tried with the cvs of winex the windows version, and after some crapy problems of invisible mouse cursor, it works perfectly ;)

Do I need to post an howto do it? (and if yes, how can I insert local images in wiki pages?)

Maybe an older libesdl could work?

Something like VsHowtoRunInstallWingsUnderWinex? If you want to, feel free to add one ;-)
(and if yes, how can I insert local images in wiki pages?)
This should normaly work like this:

Code: Select all

And if you want an alternate text too:

Code: Select all

[This is a cool pic|http://URL_to_your_image/image.jpg]
