A low poly ship
I have really enjoyed this game, and decided that i could try to contribute to it. I have a bit of skill in 3D modelling, and would like to help.
This is a ship i build it has 344 poly's and no map yet, but i am worknig on it.

Intersting design...can't wait to see the texture for it. It looks...quiet. I don't know if that's a word that can be used for starships, but, I just made it one.
You could probably up the polys if you wanted to, though.

heheh...wow. those are really outdated.
5k is pretty well the safest bet for your ships. i've done capital ships, and smaller craft at that level. if you're feeling bold, go on up to 10k. won't be able to have as many on screen, but...hey, its more workable tris.
you can easily and safely go...say
5000 tris for a fighter/civilian craft
8-10000 for specialty craft
10-15000 for capital ships/stations.
then you can go in and do your LOD's. If you want examples, I can post some.

GAHD! I hated that thing after looking at it for about a day
Here's a huge update i did, creating a brand new ship, that i hope would be more interesting to fly for people. Considering new polygonial rules, this has 932 polys
Working on texture, or if somebody else wants to do it, i can give up the model ... i am just learning how do create space hull textures.

I took a second look at your model.
And it looks a bit different because, the sidewings on my ship is fat, yours is skinny, and I don't have that extra part on the inner side wings.
I say don't change it.
But here it is again in my old ship gallery.
