How do you uv-map?

Post by Major »

I'm trying to make some uv-maps and it seems that uv-mapping in Wings3D is getting more worse with every version. This time I get the error message "numeric problem". I remember that errorneus areas were highlightet after an error, but it seems these days are gone...

Is there a better tool for uv-mapping than Wings?

Never used wings' UV mapper, but blender's has been fine in my experience (and has only gotten better recently) :-)

Just downloaded Blender and found a good video tutorial for uv-mapping
It's much better and more comfortable than Wings

You might want to try out this automated UV unwrapper script, called ArchiMap UV Unwrapper for Blender.
Author's page

It creates a scaled and optimally aligned UV layout.
It's quite usefull, but don't rely absolutely on it.

Nothing happens when I run the script. I have copied the python script into .blender/scripts and when I go to the scripts window and choose scripts/UV/archimap uv wrapper nothing happens. At complex meshes the script is running some time and after that nothing happens.

No error messages or something? It worked for me, even without python installed.
Try to select the mesh you want to unwrap, change to UV Face select mode(f), go to the UV/Image editor window, and use the script from here, from the UVs menu.

And note that it will erase any seams, you marked!

Thanks a lot, that helped :)

I've heard about UVmapper, you can vu-map directly on the mesh.

But I think I stay at Blender, when I have some time I will take a look at its modeling capabilities
