Now, when we are talking about subtitles here, are we talking about adding a subtitle to Vegastrike in general, as a title to the Main Campaign/Quest (this gets my vote) or to both?

Sorry about breaching netiquette, but editing the above post wouldn't do to bring attention to a point.
So far, I've seen no quality guidelines regarding logo candidate submissions, and I think it's important to set a minimum set of rules ensuring logo usefulness. Here's an example list:
So far, I've seen no quality guidelines regarding logo candidate submissions, and I think it's important to set a minimum set of rules ensuring logo usefulness. Here's an example list:
- Maximum submission sizes are ~xx Kb, (for posting), but you should keep a high-resolution version (a few inches wide in 300dpi) available (for printing, etc.)
- Readibility is a must. Text must be immediately recognizable and readable.
- Work on the TITLE: SUBTITLE logo first. This 'simplified' version ought to look good on its own. The poster logo is a separate submission (this one max yyy K.) The poster version must be designed with flexibility in mind--the tag and intro lines should not be one with the main logo as they may need to be repositioned/resized to fit particular packaging needs.
- Deadline is mm/dd/yyyy. Well, honestly I don't know if this would do any good.
- Previous suggestions (Mr. Blue Oval, Strangelet's) are the first competing entries. If you ask me, Strangelet's is a top contender.
- You're allowed to modify your submission [before deadline] (but not to substitute for a new one.) If you wish, to take comments and suggestions into account.
- Only N submission(s) per contestant.

A recap on Vegastrike: Quest for a Subtitle-
The (mostly) serious suggestions:
VegaStrike: Tales of the Void
VegaStrike: Dawn of Dominance
VegaStrike: The Age of Discord
VegaStrike: The Age of Overcoming
VegaStrike: Plight of the Uncommon Man
VegaStrike: Beyond all Horizons
VegaStrike : JOURNEY INTO THE VOID
VEGA STRIKE: Legends of the Void
VegaStrike: After the cradle
VegaStrike: Rimward of Eden
VegaStrike: Lie of the golden future
VegaStrike: Paradise never
VegaStrike: Tales of Humanity's Children
VegaStrike: Studies in Darkness and Light
VegaStrike: Upon the Coldest Sea
VegaStrike: The Heavens Themselves Afire
VegaStrike: Beachheads on Eternity
VegaStrike: Amidst the dance of war
VegaStrike: The Business of Existence
VegaStrike: Time enough for struggle
VegaStrike: Nihilscion
VegaStrike: Thus Spake the Nachmenschen
VegaStrike: Stardust and Memory
We can categorize these somewhat:
"You exist, and that's hard enough, because the future is a downer"
Vegastrike: Rimward of Eden
VegaStrike: Plight of the Uncommon Man
VegaStrike: Lie of the golden future
VegaStrike: Paradise never
VegaStrike: Studies in Darkness and Light
VegaStrike: The Business of Existence
VegaStrike: Time enough for struggle
VegaStrike: Nihilscion
"You exist... primarily in space"
VegaStrike: Beyond all Horizons
VegaStrike: Upon the Coldest Sea
"You exist in space and do noteworthy things there"
VegaStrike: Tales of the Void
VegaStrike : JOURNEY INTO THE VOID
VEGA STRIKE: Legends of the Void
VegaStrike: Stardust and Memories
"There's a War on, and it will shape your life and that of those to come"
VegaStrike: Dawn of Dominance
VegaStrike: The Age of Discord
VegaStrike: The Age of Overcoming
VegaStrike: The Heavens Themselves Afire
VegaStrike: Amidst the dance of war
"The future of humanity is the purvey of those that come after us"
VegaStrike: After the cradle
VegaStrike: Tales of Humanity's Children
VegaStrike: Beachheads on Eternity
VegaStrike: Thus Spake the Nachmenschen
---- ---- ---- ----
Trimming those a bit (competing amongst my own entries) you get (and here I'm primarily interested in subtitles for single-player):
"You exist, and that's hard enough, because the future is a downer"
Vegastrike: Rimward of Eden
VegaStrike: The Business of Existence

Well, this was in part to discourage people from investing too much time into logo artwork until we actually decided on a subtitle, but I see that this strategy has not been successful.CubOfJudahsLion wrote: So far, I've seen no quality guidelines regarding logo candidate submissions, and I think it's important to set a minimum set of rules ensuring logo usefulness.

Hmm, I do not know what you are looking for.
I looked through all my games and found just the following:
Wing Comander 3 - Heart of the Title
Diablo2 - Lord Of Destruction
Privateer 2 - The Darkening
Now all the subtitles describe a bit what is the story about. And are build to draw the yudience to this new story...
And it is used to differ from the other parts of the same product line.
Lets look to a game with no story at hand.
Civilisation 2 - Test of Time.
Now maybe you look after such a thing. I believe that this is again just a subtitle which describes the aimes of the games closer.
Now take a look at the following:
Pax Imperia - The Starcolony - The Ultimate In the Intergalactic Strategy and Combat
Here are mentiond all three types. Title - Subtitle - And a Tag.
IMHO this is stupid, but According to that Vegastrike should be named to
VegaStrike - The Combat and Buisness space flight simulator.
And when a story is ready. Lets say something like from the Storyboard.
After some uncerten times a War starts with the treacherious strike in the Vega system. The player is confronted with the intreague history which leads to this historical attack.
So the game gets to
VegaStrike - The Fall of Humankind - The Combat and Buisness space flight simulator
IMHO it sounds more apealing
VegaStrike - The Fall of Humankind
Because most gamers do not need to know what it is, they want to dicover what it is.
So until there is a story. I would plead for the simplest of all solution.
Vegastrike.
Hmm, by writeing it, I got the Idea instead of using the slow sounding The Combat and Buisness space flight simulator it could be A complete univere in a nutshell. But that is again not that what Vegastrike is about, is it?
Now neverthe less my 2 cents

Ah, but the problem here is, if you don't choose "Rimward of Eden" as the subtitle you will make my faith in mankind's ability to create individuals who can pick a cool subtitle out of a a group commit seppuku. I can't even begin to describe what it is that makes it so magnificent... it just is. Consider that my vote.

Reference to "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by F. Nietzsche (For English language readers, the Kaufman translation is superior to others I have encountered)Halleck wrote: I don't really get "Thus Spake the Nachmenschen", but it seems to be cropping up quite a bit. May as well call it "VegaStrike:Sparks unto Ginnungagap" or something.
Nachmenschen - made up compund word Nach-> After + Menschen -> Men. As contrast to the Uebermenschen, the Nachmenschen would be those who come after what we now consider man (without any particular concern as to their nature)
Very similar to "Of Humanity's Children" but formed much more pretentiously.

For those unaware of the further significance, translate that back into its original German - "Also Sprach Zarathustra," and you have the name of a famous "tonal poem" by Richard Strauss inspired by said work.JackS wrote:...Reference to "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by F. Nietzsche ...
And any aspiring space exporer worth his salt will recognize that as the opening theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Actually, I didn't understand the Discworld reference. I thought of it as a reference to East of Eden... not the best novel I've read in my life (there were too many too important parts that I didn't understand), but certainly dignified. "Rimward" to me describes movement in the Galactic disc, not on Discworld.

Yeah, same here. It has this solemn, forboding tone - I just like the ring of it. "Vegastrike: Rimward of Eden"
Once again I say, we should put this to a vote.
(and, of course, East of Eden is a reference to Genesis 3:23-24)

So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
After He drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

If the way the word "rimward" might remind people of Discworld is a problem, well, we've still got coreward, spinward and (unlikely) antispinward. In fact, we could just state that we're looking at the galaxy from such a direction that spinward is the same thing as what people normally think of east as (take the lower image at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Milk ... 300pix.jpg , spin it so that the Sun is as high as possible, then flip it horizontally - now spinward of Sun is left, i.e. in an improper way east)

I am intrigued by the degree of revulsion expressed against this subtitle - could you possibly elaborate as to the reasons why? Also, what (myself not being particularly familiar with Discworld) is the Discworld reference?charlieg wrote:Oh, please, dear lord, NO. Rimward of Eden is an horrific tagline, even if you understand the Discworld reference (FYI not everybody finds Discworld funny). That is just about the worst tagline suggested in this thread, and that comes with decent competition from jackS's brain dumps.

Discworld - Terry Pratchett author of the series.
Discworld is a flat disc of a world (as imagined by early european explorers) surrounded by water that is continuously falling off the edge and turning to mist). The disc is supported on the backs of four giant elephants, who in turn ride on the back of a gigantic turtle swimming through the depths of space...
Where the magic field slows the speed of light, such that it is sluggish, and were you standing on top of a mountain you would see light building like a wave against the mountainside before it crests over like golden syrup...
Rimward in discworld parlance implies approaching THE EDGE, where you call fall off if not careful...
... no, no, I'm not a discworld fan .

I don't think "Rimward of Eden" is a discworld reference per se, but having read a great deal of Terry Pratchett, the 'rim' connotation did cross my mind.
Having a passing resemblance to a term in a book series is no justification for scrapping a subtitle. It should be judged by its own merit, unless there is some glaringly obvious and inappropriate reference. This, I feel, is not the case here.
