Two new ships W-I-P

Post by Targon »

Good <time-of-day>, VS folks! I'm back online, all systems go. In holidays, I've practiced a little with my modeling and (mostly) texturing skills, and here are the results: two utility ships. I don't know if they're useful or not but I post them anyway

Big fat long-range tanker. Ol'good Stars! style:

Heavy container ship:

I like both but favour the first one.

Only problem <my perception>. The engines seem flimsy re: being attached to the main body. Being larger transport ships, need a lot of power to start moving. Such power would shear off the engines unless well mounted, or strong struts.

P.S. did I say I liked the first one? :)

Well, the second ship is more W-I-P than the first.

Apart from the texture on the engine struts (ie the bit connecting the engines to the main hull), the first one is really cool. I look forward to seeing further development of the second model.

I like the first one... a lot.

I'm sure that the final version of the secound one will look really good too. Mainly, I think the color scheme on it needs to change.

those are way cool - WIP aside...

but do i detect bump mapping?

if i'm wrong, i apologise, but if i'm right there's a good trick in photoshop for simulating bump mapping on a colour map...

get your colour map up and load + copy your bump map on top of it in a seperate layer.

apply an emboss effect to your bump layer, then switch the apply mode to overlay. fade to taste.

et voila, un map coleur avec les indentations.

Hmm! I dream of offset bump mapping
I see dead polygons....

I prefer different approach. I bake bump mapping into the color map using the scene with "natural" lighting. While some direct (parralel) lights from the above (or sky sphere + GI) are enough for characters or surface vehicles, spacecraft is another story. I use at least 4 lights w/o shadows directed so no part of the ship is darkened or washed out. So the bumps are baked respecting their orientation. In the same process I usualy bake other maps like diffuse etc.
But this stuff is obsolete anyway. Just about every 3D card supports both true bump mapping (NOT emboss) and normal offset maps in realtime using register combiners or fragment programs (AKA shaders).

ooh .. nice bump charlie! :-)

Targon, if ye are still around, did you end up sending this model to anyone? (Anyone, did targon send this model to you?) If not, and you're happy that it's finished, we would kinda need a copy if it's to be put :-)

8) coooool
A Step Into Oblivion

Dreams of things that will never be,
Songs of thoughts only I can hear,
Leave me be to sleep forever,
To dream my dreams,
And sing my hymns,
Of things that will never be...
