Sikorsky S256-C2 Flying Crane "Bumble Bee"

Inspired by Igor Sikorsky's original helicopter designs, this is a flying crane with rotating thrusters and grappler. Note that this is pre-FTL design, so no tractor beam.

With some help, I originally designed this model to be used as prop vehicles in base scenes for transferring cargo.

I'm not sure if there is any demand to make this model into a flyable starship in the game, it is not FTL, but it's rather complex and has a lot of controls/moving parts and is fully rigged for animation.

Nice even if we can't use the rigging ATM  As is it would fit as a cargo handler around bases like the ship yard.

Enjoy the Choice :)

How do you set the thruster exhaust for rendering reloaded the tex/ovg do I need to toggle an other radio button some place :?
BTW love the working lights on the rig :D

Edit: Figured it out :Doh
Enjoy the Choice :)

An awesome looking design, but I'm wondering about the cockpit... it seems somehow...fragile. Would it be possible to black out the underside of the cockpit to make it a little more secure?

Take this as: I'd love to fly it, with or without a jump drive but I think some things need to be tweaked for that to be the case.

. it seems somehow...fragile.
It's a hauler not a fighter and the cockpit is designed for under-water use as well so visibility for the operator would be critical one of the things my brother complains about in a few of the crane models he operates(the guys directing the grapple usually don't know what their doing).

Enjoy the Choice :)

I'm pretty sure the plowshare isn't designed for fighting >.>; But I didn't see the underwater thing... hmm. There's certainly nowhere underwater we can fly.

I think Blender does not pack the thruster texture, it's in the .zip though as an ogv, but it's on layer 6 I think in the Blend source.

Since it does not have FTL, I'm not sure if it would be fun to fly in game, but it could be AI around the bases.

I'm planning to make a couple of base vehicles, mostly because I need them as props for the base images.

I wish the Asteroid Mining Base source was around, is it a .blend?

This ship is modelled after the real Sikorsky S64 btw.

Cockpit glass is made from plasglass (the one from the game's cargo item), so I'm assuming its strong enough.

Not in actuality but Atlantis is a water planet and it's space port is underwater  we just don't render the landing sequence.

I don't think that the mining base has a .blend file in the repo I will see what I can do with mesher to extract it from the game and post a .blend for you should be easy using the UnitConverter . Unfortunately there will be no interior detail.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Ok, basically what I was looking for was the .blends for the "train-like" vehicles seen in the Asteroid Mining Base images (also seen in the Bio Diverse planet too).

To have all the vehicles and scaffold-like mechanical arms that are seen near the spaceport landing images would be great. :)

Unfortunately we do not have any interior props so if and when in muse hits go for it.No real need to use wheeled vehicles for the cargo train :) say slap a field generator on a cargo container tie to the next in line all pulled by a wee fork-lift.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Ok, it's just that I wanted to keep the shipyard vehicles looking consistent among the base images.

Wish we had a repository for all the VS models, I'm assuming they were not all made with Blender?

@DarkVixen

This is just so cool! Do you collect your artwork somewhere online?
I want to see more of it.

Thanks, :) But gosh, I'm so disorganized online. No real formal portfolio (like a web site) yet.

cool surprise .
DarkVixen's incredible talent again .
But she needs help to integrate the game ....

Testship is a cube exported from blender that i successfully loaded as llama in game .
S256-c2.bfxm ... guess what it is ?

There is problem of size ( 77 MO ! ) , but incredible thing , vs loaded it !
mwah ah ah ....
Image

It was a very quick test , you noticed that some artefacts shouldn't be there ( like the cross and the number ... ) , and i don't have worked at texture level . But anyway , that is promising .

Oh neat, you got it into the game :) Sorry it was hi-poly, I didn't think of it being actually used as a flyable starship. But I guess it could. I never figured out how to animate the thrust blast.

I never figured out how to animate the thrust blast.
Duno if it's possible already ... wait , that should be because the turrets are mooving .
ANyway , when i see the level of detail and the great atmosphere you create around your models,
i really think that i should focus on a new render system ( ogre3d ) .
And that would help to support cutscenes , like for exemple your s256-c2 when landing ...

If you want to help me to make it flyable and enjoyable in the game , you'll have to follow some precise steps ( For the textures , for the LODs , for the animated parts , blinking lights etc ...
But we'll talk about that at the shipyard , if you're ok .
