Space station: Juliabulb?

I noticed while playing with Mandelbulber that one of the basic forms a little resembles Starfortress model structure, and looks like a good shape for a space station in general.
As in Image Julias cage, Image Julias cage 2 or Image Mandelbulb biscuit, Image Power 16 Strawberry.
Or e.g. the upper right (CosPow8) here. So, here's a simple concept.
Perhaps would be great for Rlaan.
  • The main "skeleton" is made up of a few massive hoops outlining a sphere.
  • Individual modules sit between these hoops. Perhaps in a checkerboard pattern - not only it fits the concept, it would be better than sector columns at giving each module open angles for radiating heat away as needed. To repurpose the station, just choose different modules.
  • Add a spherical (geodome-ish) grid behind the modules, connect it to the hoops.
  • The main volume of the ball may be walled at the inner grid and either
    1. Used as a giant hangar/"hive" cavern, accessible via holes on poles, with spacecraft parking bays / docks sitting on the wall, or
    2. Made habitable all the way through.

It seems like something the Rlaan might certainly take influence from.

We're not alone! Yet another posibility:
