Offering help: Human Face Art
Ok, here is the thing: Every now and then I draw human faces, just for fun and practice, so I thought why not help one of the OpenSource projects out there instead of drawing random stuff. So here I am and offering my help for whatever kind of human face art you might need (comm-screens, dialogs screens, splashscreens or whatever).
However I have no knowledge of Vegastrikes internals, underlying story or its subprojects and basically no interest in gaining some. I haven't even played the game. So to work I would need very specific instructions:
* What kind of character do you need?
* What kind of backstory does he have?
* What kind of clothing should he wear, how old is he/she, haircolor, eyecolor, etc?
* Other art character art which I should try to match in style or format
* Flickr, images.google stuff of people that come close to what the character should look like
* needed resolution and such (I assume 1024x1024 should be ok for most stuff)
I can deliever multilayered .xcf files, so in case of eye or mouth animations you can convert that into whatever format you might need.
My work is covered under CC-by-sa-3.0 or GPL.
I am best at simple stuff, i.e. frontal view of a face (WingCommander/StrikeCommander like used in dialogs), but I can try other stuff if needed.
I suck at consistency, so if you need the same character from different viewpoints I might not be the right choice, because each viewpoint will look like a different person.
I suck at creativity, so the more character info, reference I get, the better the result.
I am only interested in human faces, not space ship textures or anything like that.
Some stuff I created (md5/ directory contains plenty of more):
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... rike-4.jpg
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... omen62.png
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... hres-1.jpg
You can contact me via:
ICQ: 59461927
Jabber: xmpp:grumbel@jabber.org
EMail: grumbel@gmx.de
Or just reply to this post (assuming the reply notification works, I don't expect to be a regular visitor in this forum).
If you have a project unreleated to Vegastrike that could need human face art, I could do that as well.

I really like it - very reminiscent of the old Wing Commander / Privateer games in style, absolutely perfect for VS IMHO.

Done, including closed eyes and a few mouth shapes:
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... list-3.xcf
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... cent-3.xcf
Mouth shapes on the socialist could probally still need some improvments, have to check that stuff in motion to find out.

Any special wishes in terms of emblems, hats, rank of those people?

A little bit of asymmetry would be nice. I noticed you draw half and reflect it. Sometimes it makes the face look a bit strange - and sometimes there are artifacts (look at the middle of the chin of the guy with stubble).
I'm not saying that's a bad way to do it - but a bit of after-mirror touch up would make things look *even* better.

That makes them all five. Pronto quality work. As for the uniforms and insignia, some input from jackS would be required. I guess this is easy to adapt since your masters are layered, so let's move on like this for now.grumbel wrote:Any special wishes in terms of emblems, hats, rank of those people?

Mostly final:
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... cer5-3.jpg
Mouth Position missing and hair could need some tweaking, but that depends if a hat is wanted and if so what kind.
And next one:

http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... cer3-2.jpg http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/md5 ... cer4-1.jpg

Nothing new in terms of content, however I did stuck all the xcf graphics into a git repository:
$ git clone http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/vegastrike.git
$ git clone http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/vegastrike.git

It would be more realistic. Psychological studies I read about (before the Internet, so I have no link) showed that the greatest single factor in humans' perception of beauty is symmetry. Since most human factions in the VS universe have some eugenics and/or genetic engineering in their background, it's not unreasonable to expect that many characters would be beautiful with high facial symmetry. But I agree that perfect symmetry should be avoided.charlieg wrote:A little bit of asymmetry would be nice.
