Proposal for HUD gauges replacement

Post by pyramid »

This is a simple idea of just adding a descriptive text to the three gauges in disabled cockpit replacing the plain bars. Useful for infrequent players (like me) and newcomers to help remember which gauge is actually indicating the status of which ship's system.

Here we go:

Opinions are welcome. :D

Seems like a good idea for now. Once ships start getting real cockpits these indicators will be integrated into cockpit meshes somehow I hope.

Also, If you just include the text in the same image it will disappear as the bar decreases instead of staying. It would probably look better if it were separate and superimposed on top of the gauge.

I agree, little things like these are definitely a good idea.

Good idea. I had to make the font a bit lighter to also see it on black backgrounds plus it looks more subtle on the gauge bars.

I'll commit this later if there is no opposition until then:

Would the terms

Weapons
Engines
Fuel

be more obvious to the newcomer or not?

The terms

Capacitor
SPEC Capacitor
Fuel

are used when upgrading the ship.

At least FUEL seems to be in consensus. I prefer CAPACITOR to Weapons, since this gauge is actually indicating the energy capacity and not the weapons readiness status and the general idea of the game seems to be far away from arcade. The term DRIVES seems to represent better the idea of both, SPEC Capacitor (for in-system drive) and JUMP Overdrive (for inter-system travel), together. Displaying SPEC & JUMP could be too lengthy though certainly more correct.

I certainly think CAPACITOR and FUEL are the best choices for the top and bottom bars. As for the middle... I wonder how many people would immediately translate "FTL" to Faster-Than-Light (hence FTL DRIVES as an option), but.. anything that isn't actually misleading is better than what we have now, so I'd say commit DRIVES, and if we come up with something better, we can change it without too much effort, so I wouldn't loose sleep over the particulars.
