Handling multi ship ownership.

Post by RtrentC »

I finally purchased a second ship and finished reading through Real Ship Deliveries thread. So here are a couple of thoughts. This can be seen as an extension of the Real ship deliveries thread.

1) Vega Strike is built around the idea of a single player controlling one ship at a time. You have added into the engine the ability to have a ship delivered to you for a price.

2) Question that has to be asked is, if you can park one ship inside the cargo hold of a second ship, Why can't you park any small ships that you own inside of a much larger vessel if said ships will fit. And transport said small ships with you. You already have cargo wingmen. But if you own more than one vessel all you can do is the instantaneous transfer from system a to system b.

3) This would allow you to move multiple ships around and yet still only utilize one at a time. And while moving from one system to the next via the Carrier ship, all ships are vulnerable since they are cargo on the main one. So the only fleet action you could have would be with cargo wingmen. Your own ships would still be usable only one at a time.

4) Looking back to Real ship deliveries I do agree that having some scripting to allow you to have a ship transported in real time and thus vulnerable to outside attacks, would be the way to go if possible to code without using up to many resources on the client machine.

That doesn't seem to be true. Hired escorts, cargo bay escorts and now multiplayer make it unclear if the lone wolf thing is or was ever meant to be a staple of VS. It seems more like VS is becoming a dynamic universe game where you start alone and small, but can build up alot from there, almost into your own faction eventually. It would be interesting to hear from some of the dev team on what is planned for VS in regard to this.

Just curious, are you talking about 0.4.3 or 0.5 beta?

Actually in 0.4.3, the ships in your cargo hold can be launched and used as escorts. You can even switch to flying anyone of them directly after they have launched from your hold. I personally find this to be a beautiful feature, all though it would take you a long time to afford your own squadron. Having your own fleet of a carrier and many light attack ships makes the dynamic universe aspect of VS very interesting, as with a fleet, you can noticeably influence the tides of war between the factions. It is also very nice still being able to fly nimble fighters into battle, when you have already launched in an ox or clydesdale (they are just so slow at everything) full of precious cargo. Defending your ox flying a pacifier or lancelot escort can be a better application of your piloting skills versus flying said ox.

The only problem with this feature is that it does not allow ships that you own but that do not fit in your cargo bay to fly as your escorts. So you cannot transport that extra ox unless you use the instant transport option on a planet or station and you cannot boldly take on a battlegroup of aera with your fleet of clydesdales and fighters/bombers/gunboats.

Yes that is possible but you are only able to own one ship of each type no fleets of clyde's sorry.
