A Fire Upon the Deep (1992, winner 1993 Hugo Award)
A Deepness in the Sky (1999, winner 2000 Hugo Award & Prometheus Award)

Good books 8) there are also the classics from the so called pulp era The Lensman series.Venus Equilateral short stories and of course Robert Anton Hienlien's enter catalog.

Well, risking been called anachronist ;-) I would strongly recommend The star diaries bei Stanislaw Lem.

Ah Stanislaw also a good catalog an other for of that period more philosophical in tone "Star Maker" by Olaf Stapleton.

All pretty good suggestions. Should Azimov's Foundation books be on here. I read them in 6th grade and thought they had too many words, but they're quite good.
