Music Committee - Call for Membership!

Post by Mike Ducharme »

Hello all,

As you may already know, we are starting a Vega Strike Music Committee designed to oversee the musical activities in Vega Strike in order to improve the quality and fit of its music.

Most of the Music Committee seats are for musicians/composers (for obvious reasons). Note that Musicians/Composers on the Committee will not have to actually compose music themselves for the game if they do not wish to, but simply provide feedback and input on the musical direction of the game.

Those of you who are musicians/composers who wish to participate, please post to this thread a brief introduction with either a link to your website (if you have one) or info about your education and experience.

If you are not a musician/composer you can still participate in the Music Committee under one of the following sections (we'll only have 1-2 people in these sections):

Personnel & PR section: Responsible of recruiting people, and mediating with other organizations (eg: magnatune proceedings)

Storyboard liason: Communicates the needs of storytelling to the musicians/composers section and back. Important task source and consulting body.

Development liason: Communicates the needs of the musicians/composers section to engine development and back, organizing changes in the API that are required or desired by the musicians/composers.

More information on the Music Committee is available at http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/Music_Committee

I'll start off in the replies:

I would like to participate in the Music Committee. I've been an amateur composer for years. The music I had composed for Vega Strike previously is available at http://mikeducharme.myknet.org

I'm currently studying in my free time to become a professional composer. I've been studying Harmony and Musical Form for the past few years and have developed a good knowledge of it. I'm going to be taking private Counterpoint and Orchestration lessons soon. I intend to go to a good university as soon as my piano skills get up to par, as most of the universities require a minimum piano level for their composition degrees.

OK.. that wasn't so bad :D Post yer replies...

Post by nsmadsen »

I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Nathan Madsen, and I've been involved with 20 video game projects. I write, arrange and produce music. Michael Ducharme asked if I'd like to be a part of this committee and I would love to.

Please check out my webpage to learn more about me and hear samples of my work.

Just let me know what I need to do, and I'll do it.

Thanks,

Hi. Do I get to intorduce myself too?

Okay I'm Eric and I'm 20 yo and I'm NOT a composer. :D

I'm an artist (graphic, that is), and I'm pretty good with my hands when it comes to drawing. Though I'm still in the process of transferring my skill to something a computer can understand.

So what am I doing here?

Well, I couldn't help but notice the state of the VS soundtrack, and tho I'm a visual artist, I appreciate good music.

Ways I can help:
1) I have gained a little bit of JackS profound knowledge on the VS universe thru the creation of the concept artworks and I can provide background information about the factions and races in which you will be composing on. Or, you could, of course also pm JackS himself and ask the questions pertaining to proper storyline guides.

2) Searching for pre-composed gpl or creative commons licensed music

a) I have already obtained permission to use the music of the artist Falik from the website Magnatune. If you can please listen to his music at magantune's website and tell me what you think of it.

b) I have also obtained permission from Beatpick at his site http://www.beatpick.com/ to use the music available at their site for Vegastrike. However have not found the time to download the sample mp3's as I don't have internet connection at home and I can't listen at cafe's.

3) A critical ear.

Now a brief outline:

We will be creating music for 3 main groups (for now)

The Humans - which will be subdivided in the future.. probably, ;)

The Rlaans -
The Aera - later, humans first, ;)

Leave me be to sleep forever,
To dream my dreams,
And sing my hymns,

I too am intrested in joining this music committee, at least on a part time basis. I am a cellist, I have been playing for around 7 years. However I'm not all that of a player... So do not expect me to play something like the Dvorak concerto for this project. :)

Most of the stuff I listen to is either 'Classical' (the genera, not the era) or Celtic... So, I will be slightly biased in the favor of acustic music as opposed to eletronicly generated music whenever possible.

 - My sister tried studying that one, and apparently it's a bitch.

Ok - I hate introductions, so I won't (technically) introduce myself.

Rather, I'll say that I'd probably make a good development liason, as I did lots of audio coding, and even some for VS (and I have a rework of the audio engine in the to-do), so I know both how to do stuff, how not to, which is equally important, and how to map those tasks to VS. Important for artists is the same knowledge, from a different POV: what can be done, what can't, and how difficult would it be.
And I would also be a not-so-bad creative guy (decision - not author), as I do appreciate music and have enough theorical background to make useful remarks from now and then.
In fact, I think any development liason should have a bit of a creative inside them - otherwise, he'll be dry of ideas. Up to a point, I can predict what artists will need, or even suggest interesting tools they might not have thought of, or that they may have thought of impossible implementation.

You could search the forums for example audio applications of mine (hint: Orfeo is the keyword).

Claudio (aka Klauss)

And that is, technically speaking, not an introduction, but rather an application. ( :P - I managed not to introduce myself :P )

Hello,
I am a composer. I've worked mostly on short films but some videogames as well. I studied musical theory and instruments at academy of music and musicology at the university.
I can compose music in a large range from classical to metal.
I am very interested to participate on your project.

You can listen to my demoreel and samples at my website: http://www.lefthand-prod.net

:D Welcome to Vega Strike.

Since you're more of a composer than I will ever be, please share your thoughts on the other threads concerning Music Development. Any input of ideas from musicians is greatly appreciated. :)

I'm in. I am sure I am outclassed by others who have posted here in terms of musical skill and knowledge, but I compose a bit, and have a few ancient tracks in the original Vega Strike music. That's really my big claim to fame here.

Looking forward to moving forward with Vega Strike's music!

My name is Charlie Pecot and I'm a composer who records under the name "Falik", currently "signed" with Magnatune.com. I'd like to participate in some way if I can.

Hi Falik. :D

Sorry if your music hasn't yet been added ingame... my fault mostly.  busy busy busy.

People are (were?) still trying to set up a basic music framework... dunno where it stands now. :(

I'll try to see if I can follow that up.

Actually, I was about to commit a remastered set of originals & Falik's.
I took Ken's masters, processed them a bit, and I was going to commit playlists using the remastered versions plus some of Falik's tracks.
I was going to do it this week, but I got busy (I have to study for 3 tests and one competition - wish me luck ;) ).

Oh... I meant asking before commiting... Falik: is it OK if I modify the dynamics on your tracks a bit to match the other tracks? They will remain otherwise identical.

let's get the party started

Post by kensuguro »

For those who know me, long time no see, how's life been for you guys.. For those that don't, I'm the notorious contributor for the current set of music, which is the first and only major work on music that's been done so far. Also, I did most of the sound effects.

Anyhow, Finrod has contacted me about the recent developments, and I am hoping to contribute or atleast help in designing the overall musical structure.

I'm all about getting things done. I don't want to waste time just sitting around talking about things that never materialize. We can't approach this as another one of those "projects" that you do or don't have to finish. If we were to accomplish anything, we need to tackle this as a definitive task. Set a schedule, do the pre production, execute, and then deploy.

No screwing around. Let's get things done.

I think real life issues have gotten in the way for some people here...
And for the others everyone is focusing on getting the next release out.

Since this is an open source game, it's always expanding, and there's always room for new music in the game.

See here for some preliminary info on the music committee:

hey all, my names shane,
and ive been a musician/composer for right around 8 years now. im just getting started in bringing my talents into the technologicall world. i compose, produce and master all my tracks using a bunch of different tools, but mainly FL 7, producer edition. i would love to join this very active, it seems, open source project in any way that i can. i also love to listen to other peoples tracks and tell them what i think. im not afraid of being honest. and im not going to try to shove smoething down your throat that the project doesnt need, just to get my name in the credits. i appreciate and UNDERSTAND what this project is looking for musically. it needs something that gives it that space age vibe, yet with the subtlety of a good soundtrack that isnt jarring. the sound track needs to FIT with the game, and in this case, the breathtaking experiance, tyhat is VGS. i would be happy to help in any way shape or form

also, im a whiz with sound effects

(no website yet, will be working on that soon)
