You are right. I am done with my torrentz (check snapshots, I have proof :P ), but I still have to finish one last BOINC task (Astropulse, it takes a hell of a lot of time :x check shot), then finally back up all my junk to my external HDD, format my box and way to go.

Simply brilliant. Could be both, but a HUD display sounds like a must.

I heard something funny on the radio today: "Radio -- the technology that allows you to be entertained in your home or car, by people you'd never allow into your home or car."

Posting for the second time, after the unfortunate incident, my lovely commercials. Hope you laugh a bunch. I had an old version of these stored around, so I had to update them with what my memory could hold. Thanks to CLone again for trying to help restoring this post, I appreciate it.

Suggestions are welcome, please help me with lil bobs warez name, maybe its not the best...?

Yet again, does anybody get the little forum reference in one of the ads...?

Commercials:
The Confed Military

Man 1: A career where you’ll never be unemployed. A career that lasts a lifetime. A career where you’re –always-on the winning team. Put your skills to work, in the Confed Military.

[Sound of ship passing by]

Man 2: I was a pirate, in a gang that shoots civilians and runs illegal cargo. Now, I am someone, making something of myself. I kill aliens and escort cargo ships for the military!

Man 1: This is a job where you don’t only help yourself. You help your faction. Only in the military would a teenager be given responsibilities like piloting a capital ship, maneuvering a fully stocked Pacifier, or dropping anti-matter ordnance explosives. Make a change for yourself, in the Confed Military.

[Sound of ship passing by]

Man 3: I used to study in a university planet. I constantly got into pointless fights I didn’t understand about creating new FTL travel systems or securing applications from crackers. I got tired of arguing about what’s right. So I dropped out of the university planet and joined the military. Now, I –know- I’m right… in the Confed Military!

Man 1: Learn confidence!

Man 4 (With a gay voice [no offense meant here]): I started having fantasies about *stabbing* people. Now, I can do it for my faction!

Man 1: Live the warrior life. Positions are unexpectedly vacant every day! In fact, I’m about to give up my well-paying job as a voiceover actor in order to sign up and be shouted at by a lot of sexually-repressed baldheads! I want excitement, and what could be more exciting than shitting yourself in your ship while its hull surrenders to the vacuum of space? Certainly beats parodying other people for a living! Be number one - turn your *life* around, in the Confed Military!

Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet

Father: What happens, kids? You look like you are going to planet School!

Kids: Dad, we’re bored!

Man: Your kids go to school. They’ve learned the golden rule and valuable Confederate values. But have you taught them how to have fun? For family entertainment that lasts forever, head over to the Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet in Cephid 17. Your family deserves this kind of fun. Currency Betting! Slots! Shooting range! And the kids love the mini-jack pots!

[sounds of fun]

Man: Plus, we’ve got the hottest gaming in system! No other planet offers more bucks for the game. And you’ll teach your children some important lessons about real capitalism.

Boy (crying): Dad, I bet against a Shaper woman and lost all my money!

Father: You’ve learned a valuable lesson. Son, it’s time for your first pilot bombing.

Boy (giggling): Yeah, bombs!

Man: Time is valuable-less in the land of gambling. It’s the Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet. Mom can spend all night on the one-armed robots, while your larvae visit the Fanboy Junkies Betting Shop.

Mom: How did you do, Alice?

Girl (sad): I busted my game against a Mechanist man and sold my third kidney.

Mom: That’s my hatchling!

Man: Share the love- the love of money! Plus, the Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet has the best fodder in Cephid 17! Featuring our galaxy-famous genetically modified radioactive boar, courtesy of the Aera chef Gromnnch!
[pig snort sound, then pig squeal and chop sound (is the chop right?)]

Man: The Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet. This kind of fun should be banned!

Li’l Bob’s Warez

[sound of glass shattering]

Woman (horrified): Oh no, my children, my family! They’ve got guns!

Man 1 (low pitched, serious tone): A group of pirates break into your home orbital station. What do you do? Call 199? It takes the homeland security an average of 25 minutes to respond to a 199 call. In the meantime, a pirate could have his way with your wife, smoke an ammoniate, fill his cargo hold, and run away. Don’t let the worst happen to you. It is –vital- that you protect yourself! Do it - the ISO way.

[Explosions and guns in the background]
[military song plays in the background]

Man 2. That’s right! Li’l Bob’s Warez has the entire inventory you need to protect your family from the evils of a liberal society! We got everything from phazers, electrothermal plasma guns, plasma chainguns, lazer surface-to-space battery-guns, and all sorts of heat-seeking torpedo batteries! And just to celebrate the Aera War Conflict, pink and blue tracer-bullet mini miniguns your children will love to play with in the dark! Get the Monday’s fevers with offers on walk-and-fulminate land mines! Got the Aera War Syndrome? Get ten credits off on any order of ten grand credits [$10000] or more! Want a new ship? Get discounts on any energy mount or new autotracking systems, courtesy of the Confed and our ISO spies! Plus, get free shipping and installation if you buy four capship-size turrets or more for your home or ship! You love your family? Prove it – with a gun. Li’l Bob’s Warez, we arm your family, to protect your rights!

[explosion]

That could be used as a radionet station own ad. Like: "FeveRlaan 105, the Radionet Station that allows you to be entertained in your home or ship, by people you'd never allow into your home or ship."

A few things caught my attention:
MC707 wrote:I kill civilians and run illegal cargo for the military!
Which military factions kill civilians (from their own point of view)? None. Pirates are criminals, not civilians; ISO are terrorists, not civilians; and aliens are aliens. The military might run their own cargo, but none of the military factions I can think of (Homeland Security, Confed, etc) are friendly toward contraband. So consider changing that to "I kill aliens and escort cargo ships for the military."
MC707 wrote:Man 1: This is a job where you don’t only help yourself. You help your faction. Very good! I had a tank driver once who knocked down 3 trees in one day, and almost ran me over during resupply that night. He got better, but his first few weeks on the job were definitely difficult for him and the rest of the crew.
MC707 wrote:Man 3: I used to study in a university planet. I constantly got into pointless fights I didn’t understand about creating new FTL travel systems
Excellent forum reference, and a good warning to new players that when they find the forum thread you are talking about, not to read it.
MC707 wrote:Man 4 (With a gay voice [no offense meant here]): I started having fantasies about *stabbing* people. Now, I can do it for my faction!
Somebody will have to explain this one to me. Is it funny that a psychopath has an effeminate voice? Or that the military hired him despite his mental illness? Or did they hire him because of it?
MC707 wrote: Positions are unexpectedly vacant every day! In fact, I’m about to give up my well-paying job as a voiceover actor in order to sign up and be shouted at by a lot of sexually-confused skinheads! I want excitement, and what could be more exciting than shitting yourself in your ship while its hull surrenders to the vacuum of space?
1. The first sentence is good, and reminds the player that there is a war going on.
2. We get paid? I do get the joke here -- the voice actor doing the ad is sold on his product. So that's funny too.
3. I'm not sure what point you're making with the "sexually confused" part. "Sexually repressed" could mean that the Drill Instructors are rough on the recruits (it's their job, but it's easy to overdo it if you're not careful), or "sexually ambigious" could be a poke (pun intended) at the US military's "don't ask don't tell" policy -- that is, in the future you're not sure if your D.I. is a man or a woman, in a Joe Haldeman "Forever War" sort of way. But "sexually confused" implies that the D.I.s don't know themselves what they are.
4. The Skinheads are a loosely organized international white supremacist gang, who borrowed most of their ideals and symbols from the Nazi party. I'd recommend avoiding any reference (accidental or intentional) to modern-day illegal gangs, unless we're talking about an illegal VS faction which descended from it,and the VS military factions are neither. Even if you were referring to the D.I.'s haircuts, you could say "shaved-headed" or something else that's not "skinhead."
MC707 wrote:Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet in Cephid 17.
No such planet exists in that system. Recommend you pick something far away, if the hard-coded systems don't have a tropical planet. Or, we could add a hard-coded tropical planet, so the ad would fit into all instances of VS.
MC707 wrote:Man: Time is valuable-less in the land of gambling.
Not sure what you meant by "valuable-less" here. Do you mean to say that while time is normally valuable, it is not valuable when gambling?
MC707 wrote:Girl (sad): I busted my game against a Mechanist man and sold my third kidney.

Mom: That’s my hatchling!
What race are these people? I'm guessing Rlaan if they have 3 or more kidneys. It doesn't matter, but it's something that the ad should explain somehow and in so doing, teach the player about the VS universe.
MC707 wrote:Man: Share the love- the love of money! Plus, the Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet has the best fodder in Cephid 17! Featuring our galaxy-famous genetically modified radioactive boar, courtesy of the Aera chef Gromnnch!

Funny! I would only add, consider playing a pig snort then a pig squeal, as if you just heard the chef killing the pig so he can cook it.
MC707 wrote: In the meantime, a pirate could have his way with your wife, smoke an ammoniate, flip her over, go for a second round, and run away with your children.
I recommend you tone that down. Any woman, and any man who is in a healthy relationship, will find that very offensive and not funny. The rest of the LI'l Bob's ad is great.

Edit: If you missed it, the wiki location to collect this material is here:

Hey just a joke, don't take it too seriously. I did understand the whole topic, as well as the cracking security one (check developer focus), but I left the former because it was going nowhere, and the latter because the incident a day and a half ago deleted huge posts that neither I nor Deus remember too well to retype again.

The fact that he could only *Fantasize* about stabbing people. Now, he legally can, to the enemies. The possibility to kill is many people's fantasies. And that's pretty much the point in being in the military at times of war.

I expected this response. The thing is, its been quite long since I've been around VS, so cephid is the only one that came to mind, so I just left it as-is awaiting for suggestions. So, there are two options: Either mention a system which is dynamic and very far away from cephid, or hard code the planet to cephid or other system, and hard code the name of the planet too. I prefer the latter, but I admit I do not know (yet) how to do that. Shouldn't be that difficult, I'm guessing... hopefully.

Yep, you should *dedicate* your time spent in betting and being in the casinos. Parody of Vegas, the sleepless city. Also, parody of the word "priceless" and "invaluable", which in reality mean they are infinitely valuable, whereas "valuable-less" means, non-valuable

Yes, I expected that too. Both the 'larvae' mentioned in the "while your larvae visit the Fanboy Junkies Betting Shop." phrase and the 'hatchling' are names I picked from a list of baby animals I found somewhere while surfing the net. I could have some help here, I'm not too creative when it comes to explain alien babies xD, and do not remember the babies part when I read about alien factions in VS. Any ideas?

I will take the "second round" out, but keep the first one. First, it is very subtle. The narration is read medium to fast, and it is not saying something like "a pirate could wildly ra*e your wife". Second, it is not meant to be funny, neither. It is meant to appeal the fear for the insecurity of the family (why do you think it has a [low pitched, serious tone] as a description?). It creates a scary image. So what does it do? It sells. *Oh crap, I don't want that to happen to my wife and kids! I'm buyin from lil bob!!!*. The rest (Man 2:) is meant to be funny. Though yes, the 'second round' does overdo it now that you tell me. Took the kids out too.

Oh, I don't understand "More importantly, I liked it to Development:Audio and vice versa."

OK, I'm kinda laughing at the stuff above. We should be careful to avoid references to things outside the VS world that could be offensive, and create something in the VS scene that people wouldn't be able to connect to offensive material. I'm finally home, now I can get to work, I'll post some songs later this week after I finish them. Maybe just one a week, except in two weeks (I'll be on vacation.) I think I'll need two more songs to make up for that week.

OK, I can understand that in oppressive governments (and the Confed seems borderline at times) that a psycho would be overlooked as long as he confined his activity to enemies. I might even agree that the military of a very oppressive government might attract people like that in time of war.

Asbest I can tell it would not be hard to code in specific worlds...I did it in PGG to more easily test ship paint jobs. The Universe folder is the place to start but all I haveis my palm computer for the next week or so, so I can`t look it up right now.

The database in the wiki is very short on bio data. Maybe we should propose updates so we can have background for our radio work?

I agree that if we drop the "flip her over for a second round" part we are OK, because the background can set a tense mood that says we are not trying to be funny.
Sorry, I meant to write "linked" as in, I could not find the new page but now each links to the other.

maybe instead of non-musical, we say broadcast, which is more precise to what we are really doing...broadcast to anyone who wants to hear the station.

For everything else, I agree, and thank you for your creative work.

Cut for brevity :P

I might even agree that the military of a very oppressive government might attract people like that in time of war.

Asbest I can tell it would not be hard to code in specific worlds...I did it in PGG to more easily test ship paint jobs. The Universe folder is the place to start but all I haveis my palm computer for the next week or so, so I can`t look it up right now.

The database in the wiki is very short on bio data. Maybe we should propose updates so we can have background for our radio work?

You give me hope. A coded system for the casino planet would be brilliant. Just imagine how excited players will get when they get to see the famous "Grandeur Sublimity Resort and Casino Planet" they heard about in the radio!

I agree, the database in the wiki should be updated, both for our radio work's sake, as for general information that concern to players.

Yes, I realized the "second round" was too graphic... however, the former is plain serious, and quite unnoticeable too because of how implicit the message is put. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ok so tell me the full new name, cuz I am a little off in the "technical names creative department" Then I move the page yet again. I got a few (a lot in fact :P ) of modifications in my HDD I did to the wiki page before SF's outage took place, which thankfully I backed up.

I thank you for your suggestions.

OK, I should have at least something by next week. I'm thinking a battle theme, or something for this whole in game radio idea. Right now, I've been stuck remixing for a friend, and this is what I came out. If I got rid of the vocals, could we use it? IDK for the game, but for the in game radio, possibly? I think its a little too normal, not alien enough. Maybe if I vocoded the piano with some crazy synth... and some other things in the mix could be vocoded as well.

The link is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dhmngmyjnjm
It's a remix of Blake Reary's song - 'Hanging On'

This is just a kicker, and is completely unrelated to the project at this point. If I can brainstorm, maybe this weekend I'll have something useful: like a battle theme, or possibly a decent song for he in game radio, or a background song for a commercial (which sounds like fun to do). Who knows. Cya all.

BTW: The instrumental will be GPL and in ogg format if you guys want to use it. The vocals are not GPL.

It doesn't necessarily need to be alien. In fact, there will be at least one human station, so normal can be accepted too.

Hmm I like the song. Just make sure to encode it in 128 kbps or similar, for size's sake.

Now that you post this, I am working on some songs. All of them are what I consider ambient, no voice. But maybe you know better about genres so we can then sort them to the different stations we will have. They will come slowly, tough.

Actually I am good at genre labeling, so yes, sorting will be easy for me. OK, at least some human stuff will do.
And BTW, we can't use the song I just posted, only the instrumental part if you're willing. I guess I might try ambient too... or a battle theme like suggested. Does anybody have a tubular bell sample I could use, orchestral tubular bell I mean. Used a lot in the old music, I think I could bring it back.

Thanks. Sorting music will be a very important task to accomplish.

Hmm you might wanna try this or also try this. I'm not sure about the latter though... but anyway those are the only ones I remember.

Turbo directed me to this thread, said you guys needed a writer? I up for it.
I can also make music too. It's all digital, and generally very varied and odd, but I can contribute, make some stuff, if you'd like. Music wise, you can get an idea of my stuff Here: http://www.last.fm/music/Just+Me+Screwing+Around.

Welcome! As you've read from this thread (you *survived* the reading of 6 pages here?? Grats! ), both writing and music can serve various aspects of this proposed project that spawned from a post that started with "*WARNING* what follows is not to be taken seriously!" (this really strikes me... )

Feel free to contribute anything you feel like; at least in the initial phase it's just a brainstorm, I wouldn't expect refinement to happen before a critical mass of contents is reached for at least 1 radio.

"In other news, investigations and debates still continue as to where the Uln get the pilots and money to fund so many crazed, possibly suicidal, tractorbeam weilding Dodo's. It is common knowledge that hoards of Dodo's are sent out on bounty missions after enemies of the Uln, the idea seemingly being, that where one pilot might fail, at least 30 should probably succeed. Many people have pointed out that those Dodo's could be put to better use as cargo tugs, but the Uln's insistance on using this ineffective tactic remains."

since thats mostly what it breaks down in to im guessing?

Nice work, turning discussions from the forums into an amusing news story! Please continue.

Edit: I also had another thought today. GNN already runs text news reports of the war, which are built by the game system in real time based on in-game events. But we should create some "reporting live on the scene" audio also, with appropriate sounds in the background. Here is a rough script:
Play "news" music, with voiceover: The following is a GNN special report. End news music
This just in -- fighting has broken out in <system> between the Aera and the Andolians. We now go live to our GNN correspondent in the field, Earnest Rigor. Earnest, what's going on there?

Start battlefield background noise (wind, sporadic weapons fire paired with faint explosions, faint weapons fire paired with louder explosions, thruster sounds, etc)
This is Earnest Rigor for GNN. The Aera attack took everyone here completely by surprise. The system was thought to be far from the front lines and was lightly defended as a result. The Andolians have called in all available forces and requested support from the Conderate forces as well. But, as you can hear from the fighting here on the outskirts of the capitol, the Aera have already established a beachhead on the surface.

Earnest, how did this happen?

Well it's too early to tell, and the local government is too busy with the battle to address that now. But I am sure that this incident will raise serious questions about the state of the human defenses, how the Aera forces got through the detection network, and about the government's ability to protect colonies further from the front lines.

Well please stay safe, and we hope to hear from you soon.
End battlefiled sounds

Fade in "news" music, with voiceover of one of the GNN tag lines, such as: GNN -- we care.
What do you think? Can anyone do a James Earl Jones type voice for the GNN intro and tag lines? Then the different news reports could enjoy some standardization, even if the news content were done by different artists.

Well it's Sunday night and I still haven't recorded this. But, the detailed sound script is coming together in my head so, when the time comes, it should go quickly. Plus, there's been no feedback on the idea yet.

Sorry for the lack of feedback! That's because I had read your message before you edited it and wasn't notified about the edit!
I like it a lot, I just fear that reporting about those surface war events will make people ask more loudly for seamless planetary flight, and then they'll also want to see what's happening, turning Vega Strike into Battlefield 3143.5! Just kidding, great job!
