midterms tomorrow :roll: but with the reviews (actually pre-exam exams that's a wee bit harder than the actual exams. lol) over, I found some little spare time to work on something.

Veering off from my penchant of creating ships without basing it on anything, :wink: I decided to really try to make it look VS-sy enough.

Partly also because I was working on the Rlaan shipstyle, and looking at the models, I realized it was simple enough in geometry. The only problem is the lack of proper "raw" textures. I tried a bit of hocus-pocus trying to make my own new texture, but gave up. ;) Anyway, I just re-used pontiac's (it was pontiac who did the rlaan's right? or was it Major?) textures to make this ship. It's pretty small and cannot be piloted, so any misgivings on the texture recycling and less-than-perfect unwrapping would not be that obvious.

So... Rlaans are rlaans. I'll try harder next time in creating a set of textures, which will be useful in the shipstyle guidelines. I will also be searching the forums for any posts about shipstyles. Know of one? please pm me, thanks.

Here's the renders, pre-submission. I've got to know first if it's acceptable before I submit it.

Please please please make sure it fits perfectly with the other VS ships. I realized that the battlecruiser and the gunship I did were not VS-sy enough in their textures (probably in the mesh too), so I hesitate to make the same mistake again. Please be brutally honest with critiscism, but don't nitpick. :wink: I hate to have to redo ships for some small mistakes, that could be easily overlooked ingame. :D But no, I won't get angry if you really think it's important to change a particular part.

So here it is. Open-season to you folks. ;) I'll see what comments it will gather then I'll work on changes (if present) this weekend after the exams.

Some points:
-It's small, the main body less than half of an Rlaan interceptor in size. For comparison, the "wings" are approximately similar in size with that of the Shizu.
-It is quite fragile once it's shields are penetrated, (Disproportionally heavy shielding though, lots of shield generators at the back, and sensor antennae and stuff).
-the current model has about ~2000 vertices
-the ship still retains the bilateral symmetry that Rlaans equate with speed, though it shows a bit of quadrilateral symmetry too (hence fast, but not fast enough ;) )

It's quite good - very keen use of the existing textures (they're H.E. Day's) I'd consider replacing the two ovoid regions that borrow from the darker cockpit-analog region of the Rlaan ships with a set of overlapping spheroids/dark bubble-like things (thinking something like a a mash-up of a bunch of tapioca pearls).with short spines of varying length coming out from some of them to evoke more of an alien-probe-sensor feel. More simply, that, or anything else that seems more appropriate to you that heightens the random-sensor-type feeling (pretty good) while decreasing the might-be-piloted feeling (already pretty low) would be great in my book.

I think, either way, it's plenty ready for slating for inclusion, no matter what the outcome of additional minor touches is.

Really? :shock: Still, I wish HED was still here, so he could have at least passed on the knowledge of how he did his ships, styles and all.

Honestly, I started on Gaozong because its small and easy and would not be prominent ingame. Just so I could see what it takes for other modellers to succesfully create ships in the Rlaan shipstyle.

I believe its quite necessary for other modellers to be able to copy the styles of other artists. If only to create uniformity.

they are rar files, changed the extension to .txt to fool the attachment limit. :roll:

Gaozong is actually happily in-game -- I just haven't gotten around to fixing the dummy-stats for it in units.csv
