Mac: why is the disk image faster?

Post by frankie »

Quoting from Privateer Manual.pdf:
Note: under mac you will notice significant performance improvements from running it directly out of the dmg file, but you can copy the Vega Strike application and setup into /Applications with no adverse effects aside from a slightly slower startup time.
Can someone explain why (and/or *if*) this is the case? If it's just a prebinding thing, I can do that myself.

I don't really know how DMG's work, but it's possible that if DMG's are compressed, it may speed up loading times on a slow hard drive.

Macs may also load the entire image into RAM while opening it, so most stuff will be pre-cached from the disk.

If you have a slow processor or not much RAM, however, playing from the disk may be faster
