Game ignoring vegastrike.conf

Post by [S|G] »

Hello,

I have installed Privateer remake on my linux computer and I cannot run setup, since it core dumps. I'm using fedora core 4, and I've read similar reports of this occurrence. Therefore I edited my /home/diego/.privateer110/vegastrike.config (my config file and its location) and set it up the way I wanted.

However my game seems to simply ignore the configuration: mouse doesn't work, I only have music and no sfx, it ignores the win_32 mode and runs full screen, to mention some things. Now, it SAYS it is using my config file:

Code: Select all

You may have edited inactive statements.

There are sections of settings commented out (in XML), which the setup application uses - commenting and uncommenting them to make changes.

This, is an inactive statement:

Code: Select all

<!-- bum
<var b.ablabla/>
-->
And this, is an active statement:

Code: Select all

<!-- bum -->
<var blablabla/>
<!-- -->
See the difference?

It's easier if you use a syntax-highlighting editor, like kwrite - just tell it to highlight as if it were XML - for it is.

Thanks, that did the trick! However I still have no sound effects. Here is the part of the config file for the sound:

Code: Select all

<section name="audio">
                        <var name="ai_sound" value="true"/>
                        <var name="shuffle_songs" value="false"/>
			<var name="music_fadein" value="0"/>
			<var name="music_fadeout" value="10"/>
			<var name="sound_gain" value=".3"/>
			<var name="Positional" value="true"/>
			<var name="Doppler" value="false"/>
			<var name="DooplerScale" value=".1"/>
			<var name="every_other_mount" value="false"/>
			<var name="ai_high_quality_weapon" value="true"/>
			<var name="MaxSingleSounds" value="12"/>
			<var name="MaxTotalSounds" value="32"/>
			<var name="frequency" value="22050"/>
snd is on --->     <var name="Sound" value="true"/>
			<var name="battleplaylist" value="battle.m3u"/>
			<var name="peaceplaylist" value="peace.m3u"/>
			<var name="panicplaylist" value="panic.m3u"/>
			<var name="threadtime" value="1"/>
			<var name="newssong" value="../music/news1.ogg"/>
			<var name="Volume"	value="80"/>
			<var name="Music" value="true"/>
??? --->	     <var name="use_external_player" value="true"/>
winamp? --->	  <var name="external_player" value="C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winamp.exe"/>
			<var name="external_play_option" value="/PLAY"/>
			<var name="external_enqueue_option" value="/ADD"/>
			<var name="music_volume" value=".5"/>
                        (lots of sound files)
		</section>
I believe that sound IS on... but what is that about external player? Should I turn it off? Winamp doesn't exist on linux anyway... Come to think of it, why is this line even here?

I found sound effects to be VERY quiet on my machine and I have to crank the sound to max to get a resonable sound out and then its still quiet.

Thanks for the help, however I still cannot get the sound AND music to work at the same time. Basically, if I turn off music, sound works. If I turn on the music, sfx silences.

I have tried editing a ~/.openalrc as suggested by those posts, running the soundserver with artsdsp and even editing privateer/bin/vsinstall.sh and telling it to start the game with artsdsp, but nothing works :(

Any other ideas? (I think I should start a new thread with this, I guess)

i had similar problems with mouse and that stuff and my vegastrike alos ignored the screensize i set.

well, did not have time to further investigeate this, and now as my studies start in May, i will not have any time left *sigh* but it's worth it, i'm sure.

well, sound from multiple sources are some topic in linux anyways. and i personally do not like the arts-server.
its just one bloated and unnecessary daemon more in the system.

There seems to be somethign liek "dmix" which is a mixer in alsa which allows to merge sound from multiple sources without any daemons.

perhaps google may be your friend on that term.

just to give a hint...

so well, when the ati guys get their Graphics-driver fixed some day (incompatible with Xorg 6.9/7.0) and i can spare some time from the studies, i'll give vegastrike and privateer some more tries. I'm curious about how the game advances until that time.

wish you all good luck people.
Continue that good work on such a game.
Perhaps some day people will see that good things do not always need to be expensive. And that there is another way besides blindly following the marketing of big companies.

well.. too much words, too less meanings...

hold on people, and good luck.

regards,
