SHIP LIST TIME WOOHOO!
From what I either got or have read about you can buy:
Tarsus(as in buy more than just your starting one)
Orion
Galaxy
Centurion
Drayman(as deprecated on oxford after MAterson missions, anywhere as merchant after original game plot)
Paradigm(as deprecated at perry naval base after main plot, only time you can buy one)
Talon(after tayla missions)
Demon(after Palan missions)
Dralthi(don't know when, but im pretty sure you can buy them at some point)
Salthi(after RF missions, I think)
Broadsword(after main plot)
Stilletoe(ditto)
Gladius(ditto ditto)
If I missed any, or messed up on the list, feel free to correct.

Level four reactors can't be put on centurions until the RF campaign.
Level nine reactors go on orions, during the RF campaign
Max upgrades depend on the ship.
buy autotrackers. They make the hurt go away.
Dumbfires are awesome.
Hope this helps.

You can also 'acquire' about any ship you want, after you get a paradigm, just tractor it in.

I got several Gothri's this way.

Just remember, when purchasing what you tractor...

A: Sell the ship in the exchange.
B: Buy the ship at the ship UPGRADE centre.
C: Milspec and Stock versions are BOTH flyable. You can have TWO of each ship.
D: Only ship you can have THREE of is the Tarsus.

Tarsus -- Milspec
Tarsus.begin -- Stock (Refurbished)
Tarsus.blank -- Stock

The other ships are listed like:
Galaxy -- Milspec
Galaxy.blank -- Stock

Be warned, you might not be very popular in a Dralthi or a Talon.

Hack the game to give yourself a Kamekh and you used to be able to tractor in a Paradigm. THAT was interesting.

ALSO, once you have tractored and flown it, you can always buy it.
You can make money buying and selling Paradigms.
Buy it, strip it, sell off the cargo and sell it. Cargo usually includes one or two Paradigms.... Not to mention a Stiletto or two, some Gladii and....

You get the picture. 8.7 Million here, 2 Million there, 1.25 Million over here.... ALL from your cargo. BUGGY but fun.

Depending on WHERE in the game you are, your Centurion will NOT be able to have a larger reactor than a Level 4.

Milspec versions of ships come with reactors and shields.

Look in your units.cvs file to see what the upgrades and ship specs are. I believe the column heading is DC and the sub heading is Upgrades

hi, thanks for answers its help me :)

when you say :
Hack the game to give yourself a Kamekh and you used to be able to tractor in a Paradigm. THAT was interesting.

i have try for exemple to replace in a save game, to modify all tarsus word by paradigm word , but i receive a ship that i can't upgrade, no guns, and i can't see it in the game :D

how to do that for a khamek ???
just to try :)

another question
when you select a mission, the best is to select from :
computers
guild
bar ?
in the save game i read campaign ???
what is the campaign, how to begin it ? i have always 0%

about the radar
in the manual it is write :
h to select enemy unit
t to target all ships
n to target planets, mine ...

only the n key works ? why ?

about upgrades, when you do that, do you keep the old hardware ?
if i upgrade my radar, the old one, must be sell, or keep ??
same for armor and hull plastell + tungsten or just tungsten ?

and possibly a bug :
i was having a centurion, and i bought a turret :)
ok
but i bought a second , cause a dont know how many we can put on it
and i can buy infinite turrets but only the last i have bought is usable (v1.2), was thinking we have to sell the old one to add a new one.

thanks all :)

<sigh>
Teaching you how to hack the game would entail more than the space allowed here. I'll try it though. At the risk of having it deleted.

Just because your save file has something about your ship doesn't mean it IS your ship. There is a directory called serialized_xml that has directories of each savegame. It's mentioned throughout many of the threads here. In there is a file that corresponds to each ship you own in the savegame file of the same name. You can't just rename them. They have specifics on the ship type, loadout, location of weapons, handling characteristics.... In short, the file is the ship.

There is also a directory called Units and a file called master_part_list and another file called weapon_list. -- These are all about the weapons, ships, their stats and their availability.

Remember that:
Each ship you fly has its own file, as well as an entry in a savegame.
Each save game has a folder as well as a file.
In units, each ship type found in the game has a folder.
In master parts each ship sold has a listing.
In weapons, each weapon described is given it's technical stats.

You need to add folders, files, entries and such to accompany your savegame files when you hack the game. I fly a centurion1 and a centurion1.blank. My ships are unique in the game. I don't want to come up against a super version of the ship I'm flying.

It would take loads more room to describe it all and how it works. I would suggest you read about how do do your own modding and scripting in the FAQ Wiki to get a better understanding.

In short Create a file copied from data found in the units file to the savegame directory in the ship name.

That file should only have the header data and the data on the ship type you're adding.
Add the first line of the units file as line one.
Add the data line for the ship you want to add as line two -- directly beneath the first line.

You have to use a spreadsheep programme to do it and you must save it without saving it in the spreadsheep's native format. If your spreadsheep programme can't create a file in a foreign format, you need to copy the units file and delete all but the first line and the ship line. THen save it in the original format.

Then add the ship name and location to your savegame file. Look at the format of the other ships and copy it. What I do is copy a segment of the data for an existing ship and rename it.

It's simple, it's a cheat and it really is unfair.

Then, when you've managed to add the ship, look at the weapons and the upgrades and....

You need to understand the game dynamics to make the modifications. You have some reading to do.

<wags finger>

It's poor form to ask HOW to cheat. You're supposed to do it covertly then brag about it.

==============

Which missions should you choose?

Missions is missions is missions. You're supposed to learn those on your own. Besides, my preferences are my own and will lead to useless -- in my opinion -- debate. Each set of missions has its own strengths and weaknesses. Round out your mission load by going to different places. Supposedly, the guilds pay best. Bar first, then any combination thereof.

==============

Campaign...
You are playing Burroughs.
You should listen to the bartenders, what they say isn't just talk. Go to New Detroit and check in the bar.

It's supposed to be a learning experience, that's why no one has directions in the game saying, YOU MUST START HERE. If everyone told you what you MUST do, what's so much fun about it? It's as much a mystry as it is action adventure.

IRL, you do what you're told all the time.
Wouldn't it be fun to do what you want?
Isn't that why we have games? I kill some characters just because I can in the game. You don't have to. You just have to complete the missions.

You get told what to do from birth. Your mom and dad, school, your boss, your husband or wife... This is a game. It's supposed to be fun. You can do and be whoever you want. Want to be a merchant, be one. Want to be a bounty hunter, be one. Sooner or later you stumble on things and it's fun.

Just remember, once you take on the campaign mission, you MUST fly ALL the missions successfully to complete the game. When you do, you can still play the game. But once you start the campaign, you are being controlled by events. People will HINT at things. If I tell you what all the hints mean, it will take all the fun out of the game for others.

================

Radar...
Each radar unit has weaknesses and strengths. Narrow to wide beams and the like. Your ship must...MUST be pointing in the general direction of something to press t, y, h, u, or n.

n is the only one you don't need to be pointing at something for it to work. Make sure you don't have caps lock on.

================

If you want to lose upgrade room fast, sure, keep the old stuff if it makes you feel better, but all the game sees is the latest and greatest. It doesn't ADD anything to the ship to have two reactors or armour or hull listings. All keeping extras of old stuff does is make it possible to outfit another ship later, at a ship dealer that doesn't have that kind of hardware for the ship you just bought or tractored in. Sell it to them and they have it until you buy it for the other ship or quit.

Sell the old stuff off and get the credits. Buy a stripped down ship here and outfit it there, IF you have the 50K to have it transported. But a Stripped down Tarsus is only 28K and a similar Talon is only 40K. Remember that. It's the upgrades to them that can run into the millions.

================

You can only have 1 turret on a Centurion.
If you buy another, you replaced the first one with the new one and since you didn't sell the first one to the dealer, it was scrapped and not put up for sale. You didn't get credit for selling it, either. You threw it away.

ok

but for the radar (i play a new game) my caps lock is off

the only way to find a enemy ship is to press "u" pointing on each white point on the radar.

maybe i need an upgrade off the radar ?

Same here.
Now I only upgrade Radar when I have enough to get a B&S Omni. Why suffer the rest when it doesn't take long to get the best?

90 to 100K? Sure, ten to 20 missions as you fly your way to a base with Advanced Radar Units.

Then you should have what you need radar-wise Loki. Maybe it's a function of the radar. You need Inertial Targeting and Friend or Foe capabilities.

Radar ain't just radar. Read the specs. You CAN get one that will have ITS but it won't tell you who a foe is.

You can have one that tells you who a foe is but won't track for you.

You need a radar unit with both capabilities.

Then....
h=hostile YOU NEED FOF Capable Radar to use this
y=target what's in front of your face
k=autotrack YOU NEED FOF and ITTS Capable Radar to use this.
u=units, not necessarrily nav points. units are to find space salvage and pilots.
n=nav points and stations

Forgive my ignorance, but where do you buy starcharts? I just played the good little explorer and mapped out the Gemini sector on my little lonesome.

And off-topic(I expect to be hassled for this, but why waste server bandwidth?), where can I start the bonus campaign(s)? I'm eager to experience everything this remake has to offer.

Please, be gentle. I'm new.

Star charts are purchased in the Software Booth screen--when you are on the screen at the ship dealer where you can see your ship graphically displayed (and where you click on the terminal to get to the upgrade screen), click on the room in the upper-right above your ship--that is the Software Booth.

The bonus campaign is started by flying to Munchen base in Tingerhoff system. My personal reccomendation is to max out your ship (pre-RF upgrades) before attempting it. You are allowed to fly the bonus campaign while still in the middle of the Steltek Gun campaign. Two good times to play it are either before/early in the Steltek Gun campaign (so that you can purchase Kilrathi fighters at the asteroid depot for use later in the game), or after getting the Boosted Steltek Gun upon completion of the Steltek Gun Campaign (which makes fighting easier).

Dralthi

Postby Vandrvekn » Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:34 pm

The Dralthi and Gothri can be bought if you complete the right branch of the bonus campaign. Thoses versions are 400k and 600k respectivly. It's probably easier just to buy a cap ship and tractor in those ships than to buy them that way. Also, then you get Milspec versions with reactors and shields on them. The Milspec Gothri is scary, it's as fast as a Demon, can carry the guns of a Centurian, and has an incredible capacity for recharging guns. Pity it only has 20 cargo cpaces.

Ha, forget it. For an fully equiped Centurion I'd say you gotta pay 2 mio to 2.5 mio. The paradigm costs (at the end of the orig. campaign) 8.5 Mio (without extra equipment) IIRC.

Strictly speaking, you don't _need_ to buy starmaps; because of how the Vega Strike engine works, as you fly to new systems, the jump nodes leading to other systems are mapped automatically.

I suppose what I'm wondering is if a moderately equiped Centurion is going to be any worse off than a compairably, or moderately better equiped Orion.

Well, A moderately equiped Cent would be better than an Orion. A poorly equiped Demon flown well would beat the pants of them all.

By Newbie i think it means a newbie to PR.
