Cube Orientation

Need help testing contributed art or code or having trouble getting your newest additions into game compatible format? Confused by changes to data formats? Reading through source and wondering what the developers were thinking when they wrote something? Need "how-to" style guidance for messing with VS internals? This is probably the right forum.

Cube Orientation

Post by Itusa »

I had a minor...curiosity over the last few hours. Are the environment cubes orientated in a specific way? I.e is it possible to know which side of the cube will be the top, side, bottom? Are systems "the right way up"?

The reason I say this, is because each system is connected to other systems (for the most part) but we can't *see* the stars from those other systems, some of which would be kind of bright. It would be nice for example, to be able to put some "key" stars in specific areas of our 'art' in order to have a general idea of where we should be going. This may in turn lead to eventual Vega Strike constellations just as a matter of course, which in turn, would be interesting.

So for example System 1 may have yellow StarA and may be directly above system 2, therefore, we could put a sizeable yellow ball in System2's environment map in the top side of the cube. If it's two systems away then a slightly smaller dot. Well that's the general idea...

so...is it possible or is it a pipe dream?

The cube maps have no relation to the galaxy map that map is generated randomly with each new game if you wanted that real view we would need dynamically generated cube maps for each system and there is currently no such algorithm available and developing one would not be trivial.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Randomly O_o; Is there any reason the galaxy map is generated randomly each new game?

Edit: Well at least it kind of makes my job easier...

It's that with a static galaxy there is no replay potential the second game would be identical to the first.

If that's the reason, then it's pretty flawed reasoning. If someone gets bored because all the systems are in the same place, then there are bigger issues that Vega Strike. For example, it appears that factions interact dynamically at any rate, missions are largely generated dynamically. This will always make each game essentially different. Regardless of whether the systems change, if the systems change and nothing else did, the game would not be in any way essentially different. Having this ''feature'' immediately for any/every new game is well, a waste of resources, if it were for server purposes I could understand but even then I'd want to remember the seed, which unless you load via command line seems impossible to find/use unless we're editing config files.

Would for example, World of Warcraft be any more replayable if all the locations jumped around every server restart or would people actually get really annoyed and bored with not knowing where they're going and having to re-learn a map?
