l found a good/better CSV editor

Need help testing contributed art or code or having trouble getting your newest additions into game compatible format? Confused by changes to data formats? Reading through source and wondering what the developers were thinking when they wrote something? Need "how-to" style guidance for messing with VS internals? This is probably the right forum.

Well it is certainly an alternative for Windows as there does not seem to be a Linux download 8) Which means that i won't be able to try it out ATM as i did not pay the M$ tax on my new box yet

Enjoy the Choice :)

This is because the F/OSS "storm" started and is pretty much focused on the Linux side of the Operating System market.

For that matter developing on Linux is a lot simpler to start as well (Though you might notice, to use a metaphor, that while Linux is a good audio editor, Windows is the radio station.).

Personal bias against? No, I don't think so. But there is a natural "bias" in that there are literally tens of programs designed for Linux software development.

I'm betting anyone who uses a *nix OS main also has a Windows partition or VBox.

(Though I do wonder which Distro you tried! :) )

Not really a bias it's just offends some FOSS types that it even exists  I'm not that extreme i will be installing Windows just can't afford the license ATM blew the budget getting the hardware  Hopefully when i can my dealer wouldn't make me get a new component to qualify for a OEM version as i intend to get the OS where i bought the box been dealing with them for a long time so they may cut some red tape.

Enjoy the Choice :)

lol clone wolf i'd be the same if i actually had to buy my windows install myself as i have mentioned i got a laptop for college from my parents and it comes with a vista business edition and i got xp from my brother in law for my other computer i guess i am just lucky just wait till i am on my own finacially i will probably only use linux or an old outdated windows

but other than that i agree that there is a severe lack of programming tools for open source games for example if it wasn't for the cvs viewer that was made or at least to my knowledge (loki correct me if i am wrong) specifically for this game i wouldn't even attempt to edit anything with just note pad other than money or ship its just too hard to know what columns the data belongs to in the text file mode

Yep cvs_editor v2 was written specifically for VS there are a few others in that thread written in Python so they are cross-platform.And a spreadsheet app has no problems with it and you just have to make sure you save with the right separator and not except the default blindly  There are lots of Open source development tools just hard to find them all in one place. One of the first on my list is a replacement for notepad which is Notepad++ it's a real editor not an after thought like notepad that is getting very long in the tooth as it has it's roots in windows 3.3

My problems have been MS Excel speadsheet aplication limits caracters in a field to 255 the "csv" format has no defined limit if i make a change in excell even saving back into the cvs file some of the exeptionly long long item discription lines get clipped to 255 characters when the file is saved

there is an article about csv files on the site that i posted

LOKl, unless it is a completely different computer you should be able to reuse your license code for ms xp as if you just restored it instead replacing it entirely i had a crash happy machine the activtion people are happy to give you a new code if you theaten to switch to linux. a happy customer promotes sales. an unhappy customer threatens thier jobs

There's always cloud based web type CVS editors? I think code.google.com is subversion, but it may work as a CVS too.

CVS is an older Content Versioning System while csv is a file format comma separated values two different objects but easy to confuse  as they share those initials we used to use cvs for our source code and data repository but changed to subversion when sourceforge started offering it as an alternative as it is more robust than cvs.

@whatch1 it is a different machine though i could truthfully say the the old machine is caput except for the HD with XP on it as i had a BIOS fault way back last august when i first installed f9 i happened when i booted into the updated kernel for the first time after the initial updates since then it would only run at 100 MHz on the FSB when it was normally at 200 MHz but it does still work after a fashion  I have done Mobo swaps before so i know the pitfalls of doing that besides i would rather get a new copy with at least SP2 that's if i get XP might wait for W7 the first release candidate is out so it should hit the retail market in about six months i think M$'s marketing guys what it available for the Christmas buyathon

I have Win7 rc1 in Virtual Box ATM  there was a problem installing to bare metal it seems that it does not like all sata on a system apparently but that was not my issue as my dvd drive is IDE but the partitioner in setup can't create a system partition but it may have been that my BIOS was in need of an update so i will be trying again as i did update the BIOS after that first attempt. But i will be searching the MS Win7 forums to see if anyone there has had something similar happen.

where do you find an update to your bios? I want to secure my box against formatting since my box is password protected, my father has threatened me already with formatting if I don't let him access it. Of course, its not only to access it, he wants to steal it and take it to his office just like he did with my brother's box  he wants to save budget on hardware

From the Asus website on the page dedicated to my Mother board. There is a windows based utility for updating the BIOS that connects to Asus's ftp sites to download the BIOS file and flash the new version to your board so check your MoBo manufactures website but updating the BIOS is not usually needed unless there are problems with the current one.But i used the BIOS utility built in to the boards firmware with the new BIOS on a thumb drive.
