German Translation

Need help testing contributed art or code or having trouble getting your newest additions into game compatible format? Confused by changes to data formats? Reading through source and wondering what the developers were thinking when they wrote something? Need "how-to" style guidance for messing with VS internals? This is probably the right forum.

German Translation

Post by dergringo »

Hello everybody.

Didn't know where to put this thread. If it's misplaced just move it.

Is there a German translation on the way?
I would like to contribute to this project and since German is my native language I may help translating.

Thanks for any response.

Welcome dergringo if i remember right the German translation is complete  this Thread has the details and where they hid it  the lead for the translation group is no longer active due to real life family duties so an e-mail to him would be necessary to obtain the passwords to the svn repo they set up to hold the finished translation it was here on sourceforge as a separate project.Have fun

Here is the link to the download for 0.4.3:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=177193

The game has no real translation support built-in --that would be really cool to have at some point. So you basically have to manually replace files, and unfortunately many of the 0.4.3 files are not compatible with 0.5

Thank you for the replies.

It looks like there's a lot of translation work to do after each release if the language strings are inside the souce code.
Are there plans for multi language support in the near future?

Well I'm thinking about creating a vega strike translation tool that is able to work with user created language files.
The places where strings must be replaced may be created in a definition file.
This would enable an easy way of translating VS into any language and less effort on new releases.

What do you think? Is my idea appreciated?

That is a good idea since all most of the dialogue is embedded in Python scripts it might also be the coding language to use should be easier to parse. The other major consecration of text is the cargo and ship descriptions in the master_part_list.xml apart from that there is the interface and HUD which may be tricky as that may necessitate some code adaptation. So start a thread in Translation Support Infrastructure area when have thought about how you want to proceed their have been several questions from other non-english speakers so you may get some assistance

If unicode is supported, then the game's should be able to support the Japanese and Chinese characters if the system that creates the translated files, and the player's system, have those character sets installed.

Since a translated version of the game will not be complete without the ship's radio translator's voice in the new language, you will want to create a German version of the translator's voice. Later today when I get near my voice acting computer, I will post the Aera voices (without the English translator overlay) in the appropriate thread of the Music and Sound forum (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forum ... m.php?f=29) for you to use. As we create other alien voices, we can do the same.

Definitely a good idea Turbo keeping the master tracks in the sources repo so other languages can benefit when there is interest.

Or you could post the masters with alien and english tracks separated. Then we'd have all-in-one masters.

Did anyone knew POedit or "GNU gettext"?

This is the smartest way to handle internationalization!
