Bad normal maps

Need help testing contributed art or code or having trouble getting your newest additions into game compatible format? Confused by changes to data formats? Reading through source and wondering what the developers were thinking when they wrote something? Need "how-to" style guidance for messing with VS internals? This is probably the right forum.

Bad normal maps

Post by bgaskey »

I'm trying to convert a bunch of meshes from .obj files usually exported from wings3d to bfxm files that vegastrike likes. However, i'm getting bad normal maps the leave holes through the models. I don't really have much experience with modeling (read any) so if anyone has insights as to a possible fix please let me know :?

Bad normal maps [SOLVED]

Post by bgaskey »

I just reexported from Wings3d converting to all triangles and the textures work correctly. looks like there were some poly's in there that weren't the right shape. Glad I got that figured out. Looks like y'all will get to see some nice new ships

How would a normal map leave a hole in a model? :S
Did you even apply one?

 I have no idea, thats just what jacks said in his email to me. I read the wiki article on normal mapping and it seems like there could be a hole in it...

Maybe if that hole is from an invalid polygon (a non-planar or concave quad) it will cause the normal mapping to break...

I'm pretty sure that's what it was. regardless, I seem to have gotten them all fixed and on their way. 8)

I believe what I said was "bad normals" not, " bad normal maps" but it's no concern, because it's all happily fixed now :)
