Is there a tool that can be used to get a hard copy of the ship data by pulling it out of the xml files in a form that can be read?

@Captain{}Blood there are a couple of freeware XML editors out there on XP i use one i got from tucows Peter's XML editor on Linux it's even easier as the default text editors have syntax highlighting.hope this is useful for your little cap ship survey
