Autopilot (ASAP) behaviour - specing with zero speed

Post by eddit »

If you launch from a station and don't turn on your speed governor (ie have speed 0), select a target and press the ASAP key (in my case it's bound to CTRL-A) you begin accelerating even though you have not set any speed to start with

Not sure if you would term this a bug, but its just a bit odd to begin speeding off with your speed governor set to zero!

Perhaps the speed governor shouldn't be displayed in the SPEC case, or should say something like "SPEC MODE", or just "SPEC" if the other has too many characters.

I posted a response about the indicator lights in the other thread (with the ~ key)

spec is supposed to be a modifier though. Not an acceleration. SPEC in the game, is supposed to compress space-time so that when you accelerate normally across a distance, that distance is X times longer than it normally should be.

You should not go anywhere if you have no acceleration.

the speed governor is supposed to be "desired speed when you arrive"

this way if you set the governor to 0...leave the console and return--you won't have crashed into your target or flown off

But the other component of the "A" key (ASAP, autopilot) is accelerating you to the full speed.

You're right though... the best way is for ASAP to set the set_speed of the ship's computer to correspond to its target speed so that the correct number displays there.

Hellcat's response makes sense. Yeah it's best to leave it the way it is then.
