I'm getting Slideshow Vega Strike

Post by polziper »

Eck. I reinstall VS to play it again, and its going real slow, even with every single video option turned off. I used to be able to run it with all the settings up (Extreme Detail)

I'm running the latest version of VS (0.4.3)

system specs

Radeon 9250 Cat Drivers latest.
2.4GHZ Pentium 4
512mb ram.
Sound Max etc, etc.

My fps is about 5, according to the counter at the top.

Help please, I could play this before.

are you sure you turned the settings up--some of the old settings caused extreme slowness--and sometimes extreme detail speeds things up

Getting the same results here. Extreme detail gives 5-7 FPS across the board. Haven't tried yet with lower levels, not sure what to expect, but given past results I doubt I'll be able to get the FPS above 10 when there's any large structure in my field of view.

Meanwhile, according to the load screen it isn't the generation of the dynamic universe that's slowing game load times down so much as the loading of small images. I'm talking about little images like truss.jpg (48 kb) taking half a minute to load. Load time for images in fact seems quite independent of size; some images (like truss.jpg) always take a long time, while others (larger or smaller) are loaded almost instantly. What's up with this?

I think it displays the last image that finished loading

Hmm. By going to Low detail, I can get 20-50 FPS, but only when there aren't many ships nearby, and stations still make the framerate go to 5 or so. Also, some of the ships seem to mess things up more than you'd expect (doesn't the Sartre have fewer polygons than the Llama?).

try deleting default.fp and default.vp in the programs directory

if that fails try deleting lite.fp and lite.vp

Just tried those... Neither works. And the jump point still slows me down more than anything else in the game.

(I'm also noticing that in some situations the framerate drops to zero and the game hangs, even at minimal settings. Last time this happened was when there were more than two other small craft in view at the same time - a Redeemer, a Sartre, and a Kafka.)

I would try seeing if this happens with the software retro setting (wireframes only, isn't it?) but that currently crashes the game on start.

try deleting the programs directory altogether

so you have catalyst version 7.9? that was only posted a few days ago!

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catal ... radeonx-xp

additionally--- try running in 16 bit color--it sounds like maybe your card is slowing down with 32 bit color.... it may not be so, but I don't see why it would be a slideshow otherwise

also make sure you update your data directory--we've changed a few textures and made them power of two square instead of rectangle--that could fixup your framerate

make sure to build a new binary as well if you aren't on windows...
actually miramor--I'm not sure YOU told me which video card you run... make sure to paste the full info about this video card and which driver version you have
