Few celestial objects are bad rendered

I see a graphical issue with the objects "Medium gas giant" planet and red stars, as you can see in the images below. As far as i remember, I haven't noticed any other graphical problem. I use fglrx 2:8.780-0ubuntu2 on Ubuntu Linux 64 bit, haven't got the hardware and software to test with other configurations

I'm really sorry, it's SVN at lastest revision. I cannot say at which revision the problem appeared...

Same here (SVN, Linux).
A sun visible through a planet. Also, a similar bug with rings.

Yes, i've seen those too and I think they're correlated, even if my knowledges are very limited...

It looks like z-buffer resolution issues, which I haven't had for loooong while.

Are you perchance playing in 16-bit color?
What's the exact config?
What does glxinfo say?

Perhaps you've got w-buffers enabled by default. Or even worse, forced by driver settings. That would be bad - for a lot of things, w-buffers are better than z-buffers, but not for VS.

BTW: that last link is a totally different bug. I think it was resolved, wasn't it?

i took a look on the newest vs code. it is fixed. those planets and suns like in the initial thread posting shouldn't be there. maybe a opengl bug.

I play with 32bit color at 1024x768, max texture, detail and shader. I've seen today that there's a "workaround for ATI bug" by switching off the accelerated visual. I'll try to discover if that's the solution

@echoes91: please post the output of glxinfo and stdout/stderr from VS, to diagnose z-buffer issues those file will contain relevant details.

@Turbo: did it disappear by art of magic? or by art of svn up? can we pinpoint the revision where it was fixed? I'd like to know exactly what it was

No idea, but i noticed just before rev. 13190. Updated neither every day nor too long ago, so my guess it's either 13172 or 13168.

13172 cannot be, it only applies to planet shaders (stars should be unaffected).

13168 might, if zwrite and cwrite passes don't agree on precision. Hm... will have to make sure they do. But again, this is only for planets, and we're seeing stars exhibit this issue too...

Still... I'll make sure about zwrite/cwrite stuff..

According to glxinfo, you don't have any visuals with 16-bit z-buffers, so at least one theory is discarded.

With updated fglrx drivers (downloaded from AMD website, not the ones provided by Ubuntu) things look much better. The problem seems to be resolved but i had not much time to test...

That goes with the usual experience when ever VS misbehaves check your video drivers :wink: We have exposed bugs in several drivers over the years :)

the ring's far side is visible through gas giant; fishnet planet.

That looks like a texture problem pyramid must have look and what are they :?: So he can track down the mesh and various textures and maybe the shader responsible for those renders.

No, that's z-buffering artifacts in all their glory.

This shouldn't be happening though. Planets are rendered with a kind of projections that was designed to avoid that precisely. I wonder if somehow the clipping planes are miscalibrated or something like that...
