Random crashes in vegastrike 0.5.0

It doesn't look like you are running out of memory if you really do have 2.5GB of ram. Since you happen to be running on Linux, could you try running the game in gdb.

First make sure to run "vssetup" and set the game to 32-bit Windowed mode, because running fullscreen in a debugger will crash your system.
Then, at the console, do "gdb ./vegastrike" or "gdb vegastrike" depending on how you normally run the game.

At the (gdb) prompt type "run". When it crashes, the game will hang and if you go to the console it will have returned to a (gdb) prompt, and then type "bt full" and see what information it gives you.

Just wondering but how fast does the game run with the non-ATI drivers?

Welcome madyogi you may need the ATI drivers what kind of frame rate are you getting?Apart from that how much memory are you setting in the vssetup app as a lot of crashes have been related to running out of memory :( I set mine to 512megs + swap and have not had crashes at all,with 0.5 and the latest svn build also running fedora 9.One of the devs should be by later with a better recommendation i hope.
Well ace stills types faster that i do :lol:

Here is what I've set up using vssetup binary.

On my standard PC box (specs on previous post), using default Fedora 9's video driver I've achieved about 26-60 fps. Don't know how it will be in some space combat conditions...

Yes, I was trying to compile the ATI's fglrx driver but it refuses to build Fedora's specific package.
$ ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Fedora/F9
It starts to unpack but suddenly claims that it can't find kernel headers even if they are there.... (Yes, I'm also a programmer...)
The built in, default one for RH 4 EL crashed my laptop, so I decided not to use it any more...
By the way...
With the same set up, when used VS on my old laptop (Acer TravelMate 2700; P4 3GHz; ~960 system RAM (64 for Ati Radeon 9200 Mobility); Fedora 10 with default radeon.ko module - non ATI's fglrx; only 512MB of SWAP space) I bearly had 1 FPS and about 20 FPS when turned off the shaders and set to 'Retro detail'. Damn, it looked ugly ;) (Please, don't comment this.)

Currently downloaded SVN repository and trying to build from sources...
Also will try to crash the game under control of gdb and post the results here...

Have you seen leigh123's fglrx How to for fglrx (Ati driver) on the fedora forums as far i know it is the definitive one as he has been updating it since Fedora core 5 i have followed the nVidia guide there with no issues myself since fc 3 when i first installed VS.If you have any problems with that svn build just post in the Compiling sub-forum i usually run the svn version in userland to accommodate the fact that is it changes so often.

I guess, I didn't learn my lesson after a first time and installed that damn fglrx.
Now I have 0 fps on anything I turn on with 3D and OpenGL. :(

Did step by step, the manual for 'fglrx', you've mentioned, as described for F9. Even with that 'compiz' - whatever it is....
Decided to turn back to default radeon.ko and keep with it. 20-60 fps isn't bad! Human eye sees 23!

Returning to the game - well, the SVN version runs very smoothly, so decided not to bother with that downloaded 0.5.0 binary release, published on the website...

Still, I think, this game is a great project...

I'm getting similar crashes to the ones reported here.

Ubuntu 9.04 32 Bit

Intel Core 2Quad Q6700
NVidia 8600GT 256mb (NVidia Driver version 180)
4 GB Ram

Having a similar problem with VS, 'stable' release 0.5.0 under Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Relevant stats:
Nvidia gForce 8400 with driver version 185 (according to Ubuntu's driver manager...nasty issues trying to install from nVidia's page)
AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor (but running 32 bit Ubuntu)
1gb of ram.

Settings: 1282x960, 32bit color, windowed, all linux sound, music off, nicest shaders, relaxing gameplay, 1gb ram + 1gb swap, mouse glide, no joystick,extreme detail....

Now, I don't know if this would matter, but this particular run was a load of a 'hacked' save-game with 13mil credits and a the ship set as a Nicander, but these crashes have been happening to me no matter what game I load, new or old, and seemingly independent of the game settings I chose in vssetup. :(

Edit: Just thought I'd add, this same version of VS worked just fine on 8.04, so who knows...
