Aren't they 'sposed to be allies

I was attempting to dock with one of four mule class vessels from the merchant clan. They were flying along at about 200 and I pressed "home" to mach speed with one. All of a sudden, boom, one of the other mules accelerated like some sort of fighter jet. It was the fastest accel I've seen in the game so far. It kamakazied into the mule I was docking with and almost destroyed me from the blast. It was real wierd, never seen anything like it, but you gotta wonder when the hud says that two ships on the other side of the system were destroyed at almost the same time. So maybe it happens more than we all see??

perhaps this was just a crazy freak.
there is no realistic simulation without these freaks.
