Losing keyboard control

Post by MC707 »

Ok so I am flying normally, when unexpectedly the normal computer mouse appears, but the game is still running in fullscreen mode. I lose all control while the mouse is there, so I just click on the screen. Then, I can move my ship with my mouse, as well as overdrive with right click and shoot with left click. BUT, I can't control the keyboard; I can press every freaking button but nothing will happen. Pressing alt-tab, alt-f4, cntrl-alt-del (sorry, used windows for too long I guess), or any keyboard combination wont work. I know the keyboard is fine because I can still turn on some compiz effects (like a rain effect, or water effect) which are just for eye candy, but nothing will work to control VS with my keyboard. I hope someone can help!

BTW anyone knows an alt-tab (for windows) equivalent in linux? the only way to minimize from fullscreen is basically... to close VS, which sucks. In windows you can press alt-tab and you will be returned to the desktop. Thanks in advance!

Running Compis and full screen OpenGL is usually a recipe for disaster waiting to happen look around at other full screen 3d games they all recommend turning off Compis before starting the game in question.
"cntrl-alt-del" try "ctrl-alt-backspace" it will kill the X-server dropping you to the naked command line  where a startx will get your desktop back.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Well, ctrl-alt-backspace wont drop me to a command line, but rather to the welcome screen, crashing all programs. Does anybody know an alt-tab alternative? Or if there isnt (cuz Ive heard that alt-tab doesnt work like in windows) could it be possible to add a native command to VS using alt-tab to minimize the program? Im pretty damn sure it is possible.

There's global keys in shell. I set "toggle fullscreen" to the one of "multimedia keys" and start VS in windowed mode, then switch back and forth at will.
Though of course it would be better if it could be set to let some key combinations bypass.
Also, some keyboards under Ubuntu use events that just aren't in the list of those VS handles, like "KP_BEGIN". Moar aliases for keyboard control is needed (i'll try to fiddle with my set on my own).
And whatever i try to bind, VS atterly fails to read anything more than "2 axis, 3 buttons" from my HID mouse (Ergo 520), which also has 6 more buttons and wheel... though maybe it's Ubuntu itself to blame.

Actually it comes down to Xwindows as it handles mouse and keyboard events and Xorg has been concentrating on the display for the last while in it's development.
@Turbo Beholder have a look at xorg.conf if you have one  as the latest version runs happily without. the mouse section is where you add those button definitions i have a M$ Optical 2000 with the wheel/tilt and the extra button working under fedora 9

Enjoy the Choice :)

Then i guess there will be no need to setup it anew when i'll switch to KDE...

Yeah, there was utter desolation, only lines were what ATI driver's setup wrote. But i googled out some ideas. As a bonus, it will also help to setup that wheel on ErgoMedia 500...

Oh and BTW KDE has a nice joystick calibration GUI while in Gnome you have to use the cmd line joystick utility for calibration not very difficult just tedious.

Enjoy the Choice :)

So KDE has a nice joy calibration GUI, huh... well, ubuntu forums will have another feature request :D I think windowing VS helps! thanks guys..
Oh and BTW I decided maybe that bug was corrected in SVN, so I made an effort to install it. Did it, though the wiki manual is a bit confusing... maybe Ill help clean it up

Very good idea it is getting out of date you might add a Ubuntu specific section that allows Linux newbie's to just copy/paste to a terminal with a full list of the packages necessary including setting up the build environment as Ubuntu does not have gcc and the build tools installed by default.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Great Idea! I will. In fact, that could attract more people (admit it. people [especially newbs] are afraid of installing in linux.) A newb friendly guide could help VS a ton!

Just one of the reasons i suggested it :) And do add a line about getting help such as which errors to post in the Compiling Problems sub-forum when it doesn't work as expected.I also think i will start a New Linux users thread in OT for general help for those making the transition from other OS's as a lot of issues do come down to not understanding to some very basic assumptions at the heart of the OS,such as Linux being designed as multi-user from the ground up so to speak while Windows only allows one user active at any one time.

Enjoy the Choice :)
