VegaStrike 0.5.0 crashing on both Win and Linux

Post by kalevi »

I have inflight crashes on ATI cards regardless of the operating system after a few minutes of gameplay.
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon X1650 Pro (rev 9e), closed source drivers on Ubuntu 8.10, latest ATI drivers on XP sp3.

I have used vegastrike-linux-0.5.0.tar.bz2 on linux and vegastrike-0.5.0.exe on win.

VegaStrike on Ubuntu 8.10 crash info:

Code: Select all

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

No, you aren't. Ubuntu 8.10 ATI X1600 mobility, vegastrike 0.5 downloaded from sourceforge ( not ubuntu package cuz, there is 0.4.3 data only ). Game crashes about 15 minutes after start. Starting from gnome-terminal, playing in window mode 32bit no sound, max details. vegastrike.config is not manually changed. I'll try to change settings to fullscreen and get the details lower. While playing, compiz is disabled ( metacity ).
Version 0.5.0 with 0.4.3 data and 0.4.3 music works well, but there is problem with landing on planets ( it takes so long and TimeMult on F9 doesn't work ).

Welcome plysovej_kaktus could you redirect the terminal output to a file and post it pls

Code: Select all

vegastrike 1>vsoutput 2>vserr
That way we can find out what the engine thinks it's trying to do when it fails.if that does not reveal the cause we may have to build a new executable with debug symbols so we can get a proper back trace hopefully that wouldn't be necessary.

Enjoy the Choice :)

probably shader.. turn them off. On lowest details fullscreen it's without segfault.

Then it maybe ATI's implementation of shaders in there driver or we have to tweak our shaders so they compile and run properly on both Nvidia and ATI GPUs.You can verify that by looking at the beginning of stderr it will report whether the shaders complied if so you should be able to increase the detail level with shader support off.Hopefully we can get the shaders running right on ATI GPUs soon.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I've tried to play for 2 hours on highest details without shaders. This is the point. I will try some low shaders. It looks great also without them, only some planets flickers.

Glad for you then but as i said the problem may be the shaders themselves if you feel adventurous then you might try playing with them directly  i believe we only support shader language 2.0 currently there are a few threads related to the nvidia/ati differences.

Enjoy the Choice :)
